22 WMR Cases splitting

Post by bones-350 » 25 Jun 2018, 8:22 pm

I went to the range today and fired my Marlin 22 mag bolt action for the first time in ages.
I had Winchester x 40grn which I bought many years ago.
About 1 in 10 cases would not eject and used a cleaning rod to remove the stuck cases.
Every stuck case had split.
I have seen on the net many complaints about Winchester 22 WMR cases splitting.
Surely there can not be that many rifles with camber problems in the world.
I recall my son's 22lr having similar probs with Winchester brass.
Anyone experience this problem with Winchester 22 WMR cases

I use winchester subs and 40's in my old Stirling and have never had a split case :unknown:
The only time I've had any problems with stuck/fail to extract is with winchester fmj. :drinks:

It could be a case of 'age hardening' in the brass possibly combined with generous tolerances in your chamber.
I would urge you to bring it to the attention of Winchester offering them pictures and even samples of the defective brass and packaging.
They in turn should treat your complaint seriously.
Commercial ammunition does not have a use by date but too bad if the maker no longer exists.

This is a very common theme. I do not own a 22 mag but collect 22 mag brass for swaging projectiles. I have received batchs of Wincherter brass from shooters and 90%+ was cracked to some degree. This has happened many times now, from many sources, so now, if they tell me it is Wincherter magnum brass I tell them to chuck it. It is not worth the hassles. It may be a age issue, I do not know. I have zero issues with Winchester 22RL brass.

I had the same problem with my sako quad, but it wasn't Winchesters that split it was RWS 40gn JSPs . One in every 10 blew the rim with the last shot blowing out the mag and damaging the mag follower.
I now use Rem JHPs and have not had one issue.

G'DSay Fella's,

Bones-350, like Straight Shooter suggested, it is probably Age Hardening of the brass casing.
This may be caused by poor or no post case forming, tempering of the brass casing?
I'm no expert on this but I have also seen this on the UNFIRED brass case head portion, of Winchester 12 gauge, factory ammo.

Hope that helps

I would think that the rim blowing would be a headspace problem :unknown:
