FLS my brass too far , fixes ?

Post by bigrich » 22 Feb 2026, 6:25 pm

i recently resized some ppu brass that had issues with the extractor groove in front of the case rim , which resulted in the cases not fitting in the shell holder correctly and as a result the cases are FLS back too far . seating bullets long into contacting the lands and using a starting load of the fastest burning powder listed to fireform is a solution ? i covered this problem of the extractor groove in another post

the cases are 7x57 and the fastest listed powder is BM2 . thought i'd pose this question of some of the knowledgeable people on here to see if i'm on the right track . safety first hey ? cheers

I will be interested in other opinions here. In my case, I had a lot of undersized brass for my dads rifle that was causing issues, and in the end I decided to put them in the bin. As you say, safety first.

Run a 30 cal expander through the neck then back in the 7mm neck or FL die until the bolt just closes on the case. Load as per normal and fire away. Done so heaps of times and done properly you will have no issues on the dreaded case web separation.

If the shoulders pushed too far back and the brass is expensive and worth the muck around resize without any expander so you get maximum neck tention then you have to work here we lands are and seat to that so your head spacing on the ojive shank part of the bullet then fire then the firing pin will not push the case forward and stretch near the web which creates head separation sooner or later first time I did this was way back in the 80s worked fine have had to do it for a couple of young blokes works every time .

You'd have a .30 expander button from your 308/30-06 dies, Rich?
It's p*ss easy to screw off the 7mm one and fit the .30 as Duramax suggested. Then just size enough with the 7mm ball installed to act like a sort-of shoulder, to hold the base of the case against the bolt face. As he suggests, by "feel".
Then, just load your pet hunting load, powder and primer, and just use them as you normally would, when hunting or whatever. You'll never notice it and see any POI change.
Loading up a special load with another bullet hard in the lands can work too, but you waste a primer, powder charge, bullet AND time. Up to you.

Only thing that'll throw a spanner in the works is if your dies don't accept another brands expander ball, if they're not compatible. If they're the same brands or interchange, hey no dramas.

thanks for all the replies fellas , seating a bullet into the lands to get head space and fire form as deye243 suggests was my first choice of fixing this . but i'm pretty sure i've got a 30 cal neck sizing die, so i could use that first , then run the brass through my correctly adjusted 7x57 FLS die to get a false shoulder at the neck to head space on as duramax suggests . there will be some fiddling , but 7x57 brass is getting hard to find , so i do want to save it .

after all , truly refined gentlemen hunt with a 7x57 :D . after pig hunting i'll retire to the study to smoke my cigars and sip cognac
