interesting new ruger 77 cal

hey fellas , whilst surfing the net window shopping for guns i can't afford ;) , i came across something interesting in rugers lineup on the big C's website . now ruger make a compact 77 hunter with a 16" barrel :wtf: , which that barrel length doesn't do anything for me . but what is interesting is they list 358win as a chambering ! now if that was available in a 20-22" barrel i might be interested

whilst on the subject of ruger , they do special runs for lipsey's in the USA . one they did recently that made me seriously think was a ruger african in 35 whelen . absolutely gorgeous rifle. here's a review :D https://youtu.be/TaY7ljNPkJQ?si=Hm9zFwNyyUtWiRjR

I have seen the 35 whelen on a few YouTube sights and they have had to change the sights to get point of aim right but if you are running a scope it wont be a big deal and would never notice .
I like the 35 whelen i am interested my self I have never owned one.

I emailed Cleavers the other day asking if Australia was getting any CVA cascades in 35 Whelen.
Not at this stage was the reply.
I'm guessing it's because of the projectile diameter, and living in a leftist misguided utopia.

Dunno if one of those channels is whoteewho, but that 35 Whelen of his has me keenly interested in the calibre.

What benefits the 35W would have would be from keeping it's modest velocity up with a longer barrel... in my eyes 24" is a good length for 30-06 cartridges. 26 for the larger case 300's.
But the yanks certainly are going ape for short barrels now, I hope they remember how their favourite cartridges from history are completely changed and are certain do not have the same performance, hope that's not what they expect.
But then as I have found, too much velocity makes it's own problems with the projectiles available too.

But that Ruger, especially as one of their "economy" line, is a beautiful looker. I especially like the longer-than-normal sleek pistol grip, perfect for fast pointing hunting.
I wonder how the timber and metal finish compares to their higher-spec Africans.

Yes I saw Ruger was making both of these and had the same thoughts- I wish they’d make the 358 with a 22” barrel. It loses more than the 308 per inch and it’s starting off with a lower velocity. I have seen them start to be advertised in Australia.

Now that the yanks don’t have to pay tax on suppressors everyone over there is getting one and rifle barrels are getting shorter.

having owned and loaded a 358win in the past , yes, barrel length is important to get all the fps you can . 35 whelen is a more popular cartridge than 358win because of this . however alaskan bush pilots like savage 99 lever guns in this cal cause it's light and compact . chuck hawks ran a article about the henry "long ranger" (BLR copy), should be made in 358win . i didn't use my 358win past 150 meters, but with a 225gn game king or 180gn hornady xtp hp pistol bullets it was devastating on pigs . i was getting 2425fps with the 225's , i only ran the 180's at around 2100fps . at close range on small pigs they made "paddock pizza" out of them like a 22-250 does to rabbits. ruger has lifted their game with fit and finish in the past 5 years through what i've seen and heard . i think all their barrels are hammer forged in house like sako/tikka . if i didn't already have enough guns now a new ruger 77 sporter with a 22" barrel would be high on my list . i've picked up a new 338 IBI barrel for my musgrave 98 for a 339-06 project for my local big game comp . would've preferred a moly barrel for the 98 , but the stainless IBI at the price it was, and the fact my smith already has a reamer made it too easy to go down this track. i'm a bit limited financially atm, but i love new projects :D
