Effectiveness of sub-sonic ammo? Reduced recoil ammo?

Post by Seik » 18 Jul 2013, 11:27 am

Hi all,

Just wondering what sort of performance I can expect from sub-sonic or reduced recoil ammo?

Really interested in reducing recoil more than sound, but if sub-sonic does a bit of both that wouldn't hurt...

Advice for a budding shooter?

Hi Seik,

The sub-sonic rounds obviously just move slower than regular ammo. Same for the reduced recoil loads.

The reduced recoil ammo might still be supersonic and have the ballistics crack when they fire, but they'll just have less puff than a 'regular' factory round which shoots a few hundred fps faster.

In either case, less velocity = less energy on your target, and a move curved trajectory.

Accuracy might be fine, but in terms of performance compared to full velocity ammo - Are they as good? In a word, No.

Sub-sonics take out the 'crack' of the bullet breaking the sound barrier, but that doesn't mean they're "quiet", especially in larger calibers.

Shooting a .22 or something is np, but you'd still want your plugs in for a 30 cal.

Recoil friendly loads are good for only that, recoil. In all other terms higher velocity rounds will perform better.

Lower velocity rounds have never been much chop in my experience.

Assuming you can handle the recoil, the higher velocity rounds with serve you better.
See you on the firing line.

For punching paper if your getting good results it's fine.

For hunting where you need killing power, less velocity = less power.

Whether or not this matter depends on what your hunting. If you busting bunnies at 100m it's not going to make a difference.

If you're trying to take deer at a few hundred metres it there will likely be a few runners which get away, not good obviously...

How effective are they? In a word = less.
