what I thought of with the howa 375 ruger case was to wildcat it to a 30 cal , the 30-375

I don’t have the experience to mess around with wild cat reloading or matching barrels etc - I’m more enthusiastic than experience at the moment lol. I’d love to do a 375 or something left of field but...I guess I don’t have to rush.

And I think that my lack of experience is going to become a deciding factor - the 300 prc looks great but rifles and brass not easy to come by. The 300 Norma and rum are on the edge of “screw it - buy a 338 lapua”...but the 338 lap then calls into question extremely expensive consumables...the 300win is a lot more mainstream, is from what I can see, a definite leap over the 06 caliber I have, can be managed without a brake, is relatively cheaper for consumables...but - it is then “only” a 300 win lol....

Mate tbh as I said first time 338 lapua it is. Unless toy Wanna crazy than 50bmg will suit you best... get a second hand sometimes you get lucky and get consumables with it.

Or 375h&h not a brash idea... maybe a Ruger1 in 375h&h

The 378 Wea Mag is a romping stomping case, Roy Weatherby's favourite. I shot out the barrel on mine and it beat the hell out of me. Not many people took me up on a try of that beastie. I prefer shooting both the 416 or 460 Weatherby. But for longer range knock down power the 378 is hard to beat. Beautiful looking cases with double radius shoulders.

In regards to the Mrs, if you have to explain it, she was never going to understand. Show her the YouTube footage of a 10 year old girl shooting a 505 Gibbs. My little girl has shot my 416, who says big bores cannot be family entertainment.

My 378 had shot nearly 3000 rounds and was still shooting OK but I hated the light #3 profile factory barrel. I personally think it needs the same profile barrel as the 460 and a different stock. The standard walnut Monte Carlo stock does it no favours and I swapped it for an aftermarket laminated straight comb stock.

The rifle is now a 300/378 and I expect to get about 1,200 rounds through it before it goes off. Next barrel I am thinking of a 300 Lapua Inproved or a 375 Lapua.

The 460 should have good barrel life, probably 3,000 to 4,000 rounds. I don't expect to burn it out.

My personal opinion for you is a CZ 550 chambered in 416 or 450 Rigby. Very plesent to shoot and a classic looking rifle in the Rigby tradition. It will make your 30/06 feel like a pussy cat. The Mrs might even want to try it out.

Haha...my missus won’t touch the 260. The 223 and .22 - yes...that’s it.
My 06 is surprisingly bothersome. Weighing 3.2kg with scope - on the bench it cracks hard with 180’s.
I imagine any of the 300’s will add 20-30% to that and the shoulder busters your talking about - probably double the 06 lol.
I think you might n looking for an organ donor making recommendations like that lol

get a 375 H&H and ream it out to 375 weatherby, 300 fps better than the 375 H&H and just shoot the 375 H&H cases in the 375 weatherby to form

have been kicking the idea around for for mine for a hell of a long time but problem is that BOB from KUDU has shut shop at the moment ill and he is the only smith I know of that has the reamer

Detached retinas can be fixed, I am with Marksman. I don't think you need any more speed in a 30 cal but a 375 can deliver a heavy payload. I shot a 375 Ruger and it was a pussy cat. The 375 Weatherby is a handy thing too, you can load them down so they have no sting or run them fast for a bit of fun.

No mention of the 30 Nosler or even 33 Nosler? sounds like it would suit your intended purposes with little fuss as you can use a win mag action. Brass will be around for a long time as many factory rifles and ammo available for 26 / 28 Nosler. The ballistics aren't too shabby either. The 338 WM is a bit like the 308, it does nothing badly but not outstanding. It is only a small increase in caliber over a 30 cal, smaller selection of more expensive projectiles compared to a 30. The Tikka would shoot 200 grain projectiles well but so can your 30/06.

you would be better spending your money on a new 300wm howa 1500 long range magnum with varmint barrel from, IMHO

In regards to a 300 - What would be the benefits of buying something like a sendero vs a howa 1500 ? The price difference is significant- andvim sure the 700 would be a better quality, but more than likely not a better shooter - are there additional benefits RE aftermarket stocks etc?

what flutch said i would choose a howa over a remington these days but go back more then 10 years and remington was a nice rifle..... as for something big in caliber 300 norma mag is nice but lapua brass is $325 for 100 and that caliber needs a lapua size action so it makes it limited to that caliber barrel life is about 1000 shots if your into target shooting. 300 rum isnt much better either. 300 win mag and 300 wsm are similar the benchrest guys like 300 wsm and norma brass has good life. as for shooting decent size caliber like 375 H&H being the small magnum i load 270gr speers at 2700fps in my ruger no 1 and shoot off the bench but the shoulder knows about it after 10 shots for the day and 50 308 shots
