.270 vs .308?

What sort of budget do you have for your 270? Would this one fit the bill?

270 is rock solid, anyone that says otherwise is either completely misinformed, or has spent too much time reading target shooting magazine ads.

But in saying that is you wanna be different why not get a 270 Weatherby magnum? Or a 280?

Nice, but I'm probably 6 months away from buying, and the idea of a new rifle is calling me. I've bought used so far in my .22 and .223, and done pretty well out of both. But something about unboxing a T3x lite for the first time is pretty tempting.

What's the upside of a .280? Obviously a slightly larger bullet in a more 'normal' bullet diameter, and a bit more powder? So faster, and a bit harder hitting? Is ammo another step more expensive that .270? How about availability of rifles? Having a quick poke around tikkas site I couldn't see whether they produce a T3x in it, or whether I could nab a Howa barreled action in it and build something custom. Unless it's got another name too?

If your not reloading - me personally, I’d go 270. Then, after a while when your used to that - you can jump to the 300wm or 338 or similar and you’ll have decent spacing between all your centrefires.
The 270 is a heavy hitter - it is def underestimated in many dick swinging contests.

No real world advantage to the 280, just a different cartridge and altogether very similar if I were going again or to swap calibers, I'd be tempted to go 7mm rem mag, 338(something) or a 375(something)

Fun titbit, I know someone personally who has a CMC Mountaineer (howa) in 270, it's 37 years old, all parts are original, the thing has been used extensively, thousands of shots, and STL it can hit a chain link at 200m..... So don't discount a howa sporter barreled action.

I definitely won't - my .223 is a howa sporter (one of the old ones with a single-stage trigger and the slower barrel twist) and I like it just fine. Obviously the availability of aftermarket bits and pieces is a big draw too. I was thinking about building up a cool customised 1500 on a sporter profile and it could end up being a more fit-to-me hunting rifle with higher quality parts for about the same price as the T3x provided I was putting in the time.

l run a 270wsm shooting 150gr sst's at 3200fps, it shoots flatter than my 6.5x284 and drops sambar like the hammer of thor

Thanks - I'm unlikely to reload yet (that feels like a rabbit hole that I just don't have the time to invest in), so a couple of options from factory would be great. But like you, a couple of good options is all I need. Having a hundred options (like in my .223 or .22) isn't particularly important - something for deer, and something for pigs, and I'm probably going to be happy

Can get good factory ammo for either mate, in saying that, prob a bit more variety for the .308.
