65-06 any good?

Post by Yipikaye » 09 Sep 2018, 2:57 pm

Hi All,

I love my 308 but I'm thinking of getting something a little more accurate to push out past 500M to 1K (yes I'm well aware 308 is fine for this but I'm pretty fail)

I really don't want a 6.5 Manbun so I was looking at the Swede then I noticed the 65-06 has great ballistics and is a bit different for the range.

Just curious does anyone have one? What's your thoughts? I like 270 so I think this would be great for me.

6.5-06 is the same capacity and ballistics as the 6.5x284
the advantage of the 6.5x284 being that you can load vld projectiles out long giving you a larger powder volume for less pressure and more velocity
some say the 6.5x284 is better suited in a medium length action, like a 308, I disagree it's better to use a long action to load projectiles out long
either kills the 308 but you will have people saying its not worth it because your barrel wont last as long
my thought's are it is well worth it :drinks:

I also own a 270wsm that is great for long range

G'Day Fella's,

Yipikaye, as Marksman suggested above, plus another possibility is the almost new 6.5 PRC (the Hornady/Ruger Precision Rifle Cartridge - https://www.hornady.com/ammunition/rifl ... d-match#!/), may be a good short action possibility for you?

Hope that helps

D'oh!

Something you have to remember is, you can buy 6.5-284 and you have to make 6.5-06. I have a 6.5-06 RCBS in a model 70 Win. with a fairly long throat and I use Woodleigh 160gr PP's with an overall length of 3.4" ( 86.1mm ), that means the projectile is sitting out of the case almost an inch ( 24mm actually )
Not that I condone it, but you can shoot 'roos well past 800 metres with this. As Mark said there's not much between 6.5's in either the 284 or '06 case, it depends on the action you want to use and personal preference. I like my '06 improved version because an old gunsmith mate of mine gave it to me and 270 cases are plentiful to resize to 6.5.

There are a lot of options in 6mm that would suit your bolt face, would you consider any of them? If you ended up using a 6.5-06 it would be unique, the only rifle on the line in that chambering. I am not sure that it is the best way to achieve 1000 yard accuracy.

Don’t confuse velocity for accuracy. There’s a reason the 47 and Creedmoor case are so popular, the case volume just works with that bullet weight and bore size. They’re also pretty mild on throats.

6mm Dasher comes straight to mind  very very accurate, capable of shooting 105-7 grains projectiles at 3000fps
won plenty of 600 and 1000 comps, cases are easy to make from 6mm br cases, great for varminting :drinks:

Nah homer! Not neither just really like the term 6.5 manbun pretty funny as I've seen a few guys of the late that shoot that calibre and you guessed it they had manbuns
