222r, 5.6x50R and 5.6x52r

Post by andym79 » 30 Dec 2018, 5:55 pm

HI guys, I have a Krieger 224 barrel that I couldn't pass on because of a very good price, it has a very fast twist 1:7.7. Whilst I know that you can shoot lights out of it, accuracy might well be compromised, it's really for heavies.

The only cartridge commonly used with a 1:8 twist is the 223, I am not a fan of the cartridge as I believe other 22 cartridges to be superior. Also I am looking for a small headed rimmed case.

I am not looking to achieve max velocities rather an accurate load with a near full load of powder. It might be a long shot but I am looking to hear from anyone who shoots 69-80 grain bullets from any of these cartridges 222R, 5.6x50r or 5.6x52r?

I reckon if the right throat is cut for heavies then cartridges could achieve the following velocities with an 80 grainer respectively 2250fps, 2500fps and 2600fps.

Thoughts please

Ah the old shortened necked down savage 250-3000, the most accurate 22 cartridge and a lot more efficient than the 22-250 the get to the same place.

Is it usually used for shooting lights very fast from a slow twist barrel or does it also see use for heavies from a fast twist for longer range?

I have a friend who uses a 22 Dasher in Fly Comps using 80 grain Bergers. No other 22 comes close.

Beware of the 5.6 X 52R, it's actually a 22 Savage Hi-Power and has a .228" projectile.

It's based on a necked down 30-30Win.

The equivalent for your .224" barrel would be a .225 Winchester, might be worth considerin, or it's parent, .219 Zipper.

I am doing tests on the 80gr bergers in my 22 dasher tomorrow, it is like a 22-250 on steroids
the 55gr zmax are pretty good value, 1st shot out of a cold clean barrel then four into a good group at 120 yards

the barrel you have is well worth doing a 22br or dasher with  :drinks:

If I go for the 5.6x52r i would have in chambered in 224 barrel, so its weird 228 if of no significance (I know a couple of people who have had that done).

A small head and safe pressure are my main concern.

What action are you using? Is it a heavy profile or more of a hunting profile Kreiger?

Its a Cadet and more of a heavy hunting profile.

I am thinking the 5.6x50R at the moment its the perfect size for the Cadet, and has just about another coal in the fire to get it done, I think the 222r is just a bit too small.

If the cadet was a bit bigger and had a bit bigger barrel shank the 220 Swift would be the bomb, I reckon you could get 80s to 3000fps in that.

One hell of a barrel for a Cadet, would you consider a 222 Magnum AI?

I wouldn't go pushing the Cadet too far, 222Rimmed work pretty well.

Will It eject 220 swift??I would go for the swift in a single shot rifle it is famous as going out to 500 yard.with 70-80gn pill it will not be going too fast the barrel burner is only if too many shots are taken quickly and using light bullets

A 220 Swift in a Ruger 1 that is probably the way to go!

It just seems like too much for a cadet.

I was fortunate to have a greener shotgun from 1888 and the falling block action is strong. Are cadets made the same??there is no .224 chamber that will cause any issues and you say the barrel is heavy duty so should work good. You can always download with trail boss but you can't load up .222R

Very true, I have a Greener GP, I have been told by my smith that they are strong as hell and can take a lot of pressure, cases like 500 S&W and others who have it set that its a shotgun say its a 12-15kpsi gun!

I have always been unsure and wondered if the truth was in the middle, as a GP isn't like any other shotgun, its essentially a large framed martini!

If so it would be tempting, its not much of a shotgun, but could well be a good rifle.

The 450/577 boxer was the rifle version of the GPGreener.doubt a .224 rifle would create more pressure than that bigass slug thrower.Hope you go for it would like to see how it goes

I have a martini cadet chambered in .222k rimmed which I inherited from my late dad. It's an improved .222 rimmed 1/14 twist. My experience with this rifle is it can handle a max load but will not extract if I get to enthusiastic on the powder scales. That is the weak point with the cadet action. It is offset by it being a handy little rifle that has a 24" medium heavy barrel and shoots 50-55g bullet into 1/2" groups and have headshot foxes with it out to 300m. I can't see the point in putting a bigger case into a martini cadet unless you go with a bigger bore. With the barrel you are talking about longer bullets would be the go but will create more pressure and would have to be loaded down to lower pressures to extract reliably and a fair loss In velocity. I reckon you'd be better off with a different action for that barrel. I'm currently loadin 21g of BM 8208 with a 50g TNT, and that's all I can get out of it before I have to embarrass myself in front of my mates by using a cleaning rod to extract the fired case.
