keeping to a pump or lever platform is there a calibre comprimise of the two (shoots flat but still makes a pigs head explode)

I did also see henry have released a new lever in 38-55 with a side loading gate but havent looked into availability of ammo or reloading materials

The .308 is just a step up from that in my opinion. It is more than enough for pigs, and will have a good trajectory, mild recoil compared to the 45/70, available in many rifles, plenty of ammo to choose from, lots of second hand rifles...…. etc etc etc.
If you can't nail pigs with a .308 then you need more practice.
