45/70
300 (strong) JHP 2,275 ft/s (693 m/s) 3,449 ft⋅lbf (4,676 J)

458winmag
400 gr (26 g) FN 2,468 ft/s (752 m/s) 5,411 ft⋅lbf (7,336 J)

theres abit in it...

best thing about 458 winmag is getting it reamed to 458 lott, only reason i brought one.
450 rigby sounds like abit of a power house too, just too much alike to what iv allready got.

You need to compare apples with apples or you flatter the 458. The 45/70 shoots a 300 grain pill at 2550 fps, at least my Ruger #1 does, the 458 can squeeze 2750 fps out of it.

You are right about getting a 458 Lott reamer to smarten up the old 458. For me a 45/120 looks much cooler if you want to do the same for your 45/70 chamber. As long as you are having fun with your big bore who cares if someone else can send them a bit quicker.

I would go the 375 out of the two you have there
not that the 06 wouldn't be a practical rifle just I have always wanted a 375 94 big bore :drinks:

Mate I agree my comment was a little facetious towards the 45-70, but 458 is still elephant gun power, 5300tlbs.

For the record 458 win will push a 400 grain about as fast or slightly faster than the 450 pushes a 600. In the region of 2450..

tell the minister for finance that you need a Verney Carron Speedline in 300win. big knocking power, fast shooter, flat and good at long range, devastating at short range, no more recoil than what a 45-70 has... etc etc
Guns:
Rossi S/S 410
Lanber U/O 12 gauge
Adler B220PG 12 gauge
Ruger 22lr
Remington 270 win
Howa 223
Weatherby 300 Winmag

Well apples to apples mate, the OP is after a guide gun, which are the figures crackers quoted. They can't handle anywhere near the pressures of the Ruger no.1 single shot.

A good mate of mine has 12 firearms including a 45/70 and 30-06 pump...
The 45/70 - whilst a great fun gun - comes out of his safe maybe once a year...if that. It doesn’t really do anything better (or close to) than a more conventional rifle. Its like an artillery trajectory curve with 400+ gns
Tikka .260 (Z5 5x25/52)
Steyr Pro Varmint .223 - VX 3
CZ455 .22 & Norinco .22 (vtex 4-12, bush 3-9)
ATA 686 U/O 12g & Baikal S/S 12g.
Adler a110 reddot
Sauer 30-06 - VX 3
Howa 300 win mag. SHV 5-20/56
Marlin SBL 45/70

The WW2 88mm anti tank gun is an artillery piece and with a muzzle velocity of 2,700 fps it shoots flatter than a 30/06 shooting heavier pills.

Your mate needs to get out and enjoy his 45/70 some more. It is great at poking big holes in things.
