Hornady 223Rem TAP 60GR consistency

Post by rossfrb » 16 Sep 2019, 9:17 pm

Hi
Any one tried this stuff?
The red box and projies with the pointy plastic tip (reputedly VMAX).
I'm interested to know how consistently it shoots both accuracy wise and between round muzzle velocity.
Understand different rifles like different ammo, but if it's the general consensus of people who've tried it that this stuff doesn't group well and between round MV is all over the shop - it's not promising. Also what twist barrel were you using?

Yep.
25.0gns of Ar2206H in a 1:9 steyr varmint barrel, groups .65 inch at 100...any brass, any apparent seating depth, small cci rifle primers.

If you have an accurate rifle with a good barrel I am betting that TAP will shoot acceptably well. If you are not a reloader then it is probably a safe bet that you could get some reasonable results using it.

I use it in a 14.5" 223 wylde which is 1:8.
My only feedback is that it groups well for my purpose but I never shoot inside 200m.
The only other ammo I use in this rifle is outback 69g SMK, which is probably a little more accurate if punching paper is your thing.

I use this now in my t3 lite and it shoots very well. As good or better groups and consistency as anything I've tried.( including premium $50+ box). At the price its hard to beat.

I have tested them and found them to work accuracy wise very well. This is the reload ones though that don't have any nice red tips. I would certainly use them as a go to round. I have not tested the claims of them being barrier breaking and then still good as a projectile. I don't think they would be as good as the SS109 with the steel insert but a great deal more consistent accuracy wise.

I love them, hence why I bought 10 boxes last week.

So I did some more testing today with some 62gn tap and managed to shoot this group with 23.5gns at 110m
Definitely my best group of anything thus far...

Why is it shooting three close together and throwing the other two all over the shop.?

Was a bit of an experiment with the 223 using TAP projectiles...the OP asked if they were consistent...those 3 shots were very consistent. I was messing around with 55, 60 and 62 TAP and even tried some 26.5gm loads which was chrono at 3400fps but spraying...

Yeah...

Vmax is a BT, TAP is lead point as per website selling insanely cheap projectiles =

TAP - TACTICAL APPLICATION POLICE
22CAL 62GR SOFT POINT
BOAT TAIL
PROJECTILES
TAP® Barrier™ Law Enforcement projectiles with hard hitting performance. The design 62 gr. TAP® Barrier™ allows the projectile to maintain its structural integrity while punching through barriers and game, yet initiates expansion in soft tissue. Which translates to higher energy and harder-hitting performance.

No worries, the other shots are not part of that group. You were just firing three shot groups?

Are your projectiles lead tipped or plastic tipped?

Yeah - 3 shot groups just to get an indication. Using cheap, bulk buy - insert shop name here - hornady's thus why i thought OP was asking about consistency, as being as budget as they are, there are some issues with roundness and weight..
The tips are lead - my bad the 62gr lead tip projectiles are not the same as the factory BT tips, thought the nominated "TAP" projectiles would have been the same across the board - not the case...Out.

Its all good Tassie.I load Remington PSP in my .222 coz they cost $17.95 a bag of 100 and I do not take shots past 100m with them and they are accurate for what I do.The .243 is for longer shots

Don’t want to take the thread further off topic, given I now realise the threads intent - but I was shocked to see that group appear with such a budget projectile...my mate who was operating the chrono, reckoned is used a pencil to stab the holes lol. I bought a crap load more of them last night.

Yep those are the factory loads I was asking about.
Some reasonable deals around for 200 rounds.
If it shoots reasonably well then it could be good plinking/hunting ammo.
