Narrower bullet always better ballistics?

Post by butiwanna » 20 Feb 2014, 12:15 pm

Hi guys,

I've read a bit on the discussion of 7mm-08 vs .308 and how the 7mm-08 has better ballistics using equal weight bullets of the same kind.

As a rule of thumb, does that principle scale across other calibres?

e.g. 7mm Rem Mag vs 300 Win Mag, 7mm has better ballistics again for same weight bullets.

.270 vs .30-06 and so on...

Thanks.

yes and no. Bullet design also has a big part the shape of the ogive and if flat base or boat tail and what angle of boat tail. But all that aside if you had the same bullet weight and bullet design eg boat tail & ogive dimensions etc The yes it will have a better BC.
eg 55gr NBT 22cal compared to a 55gr NBT 17cal the 17 cal would be like a dart thus better BC. I know a 17cal 55gr is a bit far fetch but it give you an idea on why.

Sound like you're muddling the bullet and the cartridge a bit here...

A cartridge or calibre doesn't have better ballistics than another. When comparing two similar designed bullets available in each calibre though, one may be better than the other.

You could load a high BC 30 cal bullet and a low BC 7mm to say the 30 cal is better. Or load them vice versa to say the opposite.

Bullets, not cartridges.

The opening post did give an example and note some weight and type of bullets.

"I've read a bit on the discussion of 7mm-08 vs .308 and how the 7mm-08 has better ballistics using equal weight bullets of the same kind."

Given this statement I'd say yes, a smaller caliber bullet of similar weight and shape will have better balistics because it is longer and narrower as varmtr said

Yup, that's the idea.

Thanks for the answers.

They confirmed the train of thought I was on, now just for the final decision ;)
