Sako twist rate/projectile weight

Post by Die Judicii » 21 Mar 2020, 6:34 pm

Hi all,
This is an area that I do not delve into much,, and need some advice from those that do.

Basic starting info,
Sako 75 Hunter
.308

When I googled it said the twist rate is ( 1 /11 )

When I counted the cleaning rod revolutions in my rifle I got ( 1 / 12 )

Apart from that difference, can anyone tell me how a 185gr projectile perform/behave coming out the spout ??

I usually only use 150 gr (factory)
I do not fear death itself... Only its inopportune timing!
I've come to realize that,,,,, the two most loving, loyal, and trustworthy females in my entire life were both canines.

It will depend on its length, not its weight. A blunt bullet might work, a VLD might not.

Power Point Subsonics sounds like a blunt bullet.
Compare its length with a bullet you already know shoots okay in the rifle, if it's close give it a try.

I just Googled that and it came back as ammunition? In that case, they come in 20rd boxes so just get some and see how they shoot. I can't find a picture of the bullet anywhere.

Overall length of the cartridge doesn't tell us anything, although the shorter length does imply a blunter bullet.

As blade said the size of the projectile will have a huge impact.

If your twist rate is 1.12 then very likely itv will be marginally stable at best. If it is indeed 1.11 then you will be fine.

I'm gonna try one or two on paper just to see how they fly (straight n true or erratic)

If need be I have another .308 that is definitely 1 in 11 twist.
Don't wanna use it unless I can help it cos it is brand new, unfired, top shelf, and tucked away.

Had a bit of a look around and I can't find this bullet anywhere, not even on Winchester's US site.
Does it say on the box who makes the bullet?

Yeah Mate,
Winchester,
Made in USA,
Made in USA Olin Corp.

I know you won't find em just sitting on the shelf in most Gun Shops,
But after a phone call to determine their supplier has them it's a simple matter of ordering them in.

Winchester made the cartridge, but they don't list the bullet as a component.

I think that you are paying too much for low performance ammo. Could you just load a Vmax over Trailboss and see if that shoots for less than $1 each?

I probably would have already done that, IF I reload,,,,,, but I don't.

The ability of a barrel to handle a particular projectile is simply a function of projectile overall length and velocity.

Ok, thanks fellas,, it seems 1 in 12 is gonna be ratsh!t,,,
! in 11 will be fine.

If there is a better option,,,,,,,,, what would it be ?

You guys are making me have a re think.
So do I look for a 1 in 11 or is there something better ???

.308 is generally 10"-twist.
I would try them before assuming they won't work.

I wouldn't be rebarreling the rifle just yet.

Well I solved the problem,,,,,,,,,, pretty simple really.
I just this morning bought another rifle with a 1 in 10 twist barrel .

I just needed a good excuse to get another toy I guess.
