Hi Experts,

Whats your favourite Sambar Factory ammo .Do you think modren technology is better e.g controlled and rapid expansions etc or old Core lokts are way to go?
Secondly anyone know how new Browning BXC line performs on Sambar ?

For what it's worth I have used BXC in 308 on precisely one sambar, and that one sambar was very much a "bang, flop" - literally fell over were it stood. However it was probably only 18 months old, not a biggie so I could well have got the same result with pretty much anything as long as it expanded. Anyway, it went out the other side but there was more than enough internal damage to make it clear it there was never going to be any doubt about the outcome. I haven't felt the need to change ammo for that rifle since, I'm pretty confident it would handle a big boy given how it performed on a smaller one.

As per always though, any bullet in the right place works a hell of a lot better than the worlds best in the wrong place.

Only 2 for me. 1 with 180gr hotcore and 1 with 180gr interlock. Just a few yards and down.

There are better Im sure but the corelokts are recomended in Secrets of Sambar 1. So I guess treat them as a minimum.

The 50/120 is a handy Sambar cartridge but if you need factory ammo, the little sister 45/70 Govt will get the job done. I would recommend the Ruger #1 for extra style points.

l usually use my 30-06 but there are plenty of cartridges that work well
l have been successfully using berger classic hunter bullets, bang flop

the interlocks have worked as well as sst's and gamekings

Timely thread.

Im currently in the market for my first deer rifle after moving from WA to VIC recently.

Lots of research being done but its down to .308, 300WM & 7mm REM MAG at the moment but from my virginal knowledge.

Im leaning towards .308 with the pros being Cheap(er), plentiful factory offerings as well as diverse range of hand loads, short action and plentiful rifle options.

But i'm worried about the limited margin for error (by the me, the user) at longer ranges (300m+)

Now I haven't shot anything bigger than Roos with my .223 so this would effectively be my first big boy rifle and the only one of the above calibres that i have actually shot firsthand is the .308

I'm interested to hear some practical opinions from locals rather than the plethora of information out of the states on the above cals.

I am not the most accomplished Sambar hunter, however all my encounters with them has been in close bush at short range, less than 100 metres. While the 7mm RM and 300 WSM will do the job, you probably won't get to stretch their legs. Using a long range rifle with a longer barrel while stalking in the bush can be a pain. Not to say that it cannot be done.

If you were to get one of your nominated cases, the WSM is a capable case with a ton of accuracy potential.

if l did not own what l have for a walk around rifle l would have a 270wsm in a light rifle for sambar
l have one in heavy varmint that drops them like the hammer of thor

very good round in 150gr especially

not to say a 308 wouldn't do the job ;)

308, 270, 30-06 & if you want go bigger but they do the job. I have a 30-06, bloody popular.

Consider cost of ammo and bullets if you reload. 30 cal are pretty cheap in comparison to some of the others.

Oops, forgot to mention, shots over 200 yards are pretty unusual.

I had to make same decision couple of years ago. At that time i was looking to buy only one gun for all my needs. I asked myself a simple question and end up getting 30-06 and have no regrets.

My question was, which gun can shoot from 100 grns to 220grs bullet. Meaning single gun can ethically kill Fox,Goats,Pigs,Dogs and any Deer available in Australia upto Huge sambar stag and answer was 30-06!

I'm just playing around with a newly acquired (well 2 years ago) a Zastava 9.3x62mm Mauser,I like it,though it has not brought down a Sambar yet(have been in and out of hospital and seeing specialists) have not shot anything with it yet, wanting too this year now that I am a lot better.
When I bought the 9.3,I did not think about ammo and projectiles for it,they are hard to find sometimes,I thought maybe I should have gone with the .338WM,but I have it now,so will have to do with it,also found projectiles for it and some cases, anyone else use a 9.3x62mm????
Cheers
