303-25 and .308 Winchester comments

Post by barbender » 31 May 2020, 10:26 pm

Hi All, just an intro as it is my first post, I have been shooting and reloading since I was 13 years old, if the maths works out that was 1969, and yes I still remember when Myer and K Mart used to sell guns!! I don't think I am too bad a shot as I have a 1980 Winchester .222 medium weight sporter XTR 70,(bought new from Bob Schwartz (Peter Schwartz - Gunsmith's father) both great blokes) fitted with a fixed power Weaver K10, a Harris Bi-Pod, and with individually to the 10th grain weighed hand loads I can confidently head shoot rabbits out to 250 meters. If I miss it's me not the gun!! we all have our failings sometime.

Now the intro is over just a request for 2 caliber comments.

1. 303-25 I love this caliber, I have 2 rifles chambered a re-barrelled SMLE and a re barrelled P14. The P14 is a 100 yard tack holer, clover leafing on the target, the SMLE not to far behind 10 to 15 mm. The 6.5 cal is starting to interest me should I upgrade ?? if so what (don't want Creedmore).

2. I recently purchased an old Savage Model 99A in .308 Winchester, the barrel in great condition, I have a Weaver 2.5 to 7 wide view scope to go on, thoughts of this combination as a deer rifle??.

Regards to all, let's protect our sport

Hi Mate,

I'm new to this format also.

Liked your Kmart story, I still have some 22lr kicking around. Ha ha

1. Love old school 303-25...... have you tried 6.55 x 55 swed ? been using it for 30 yrs, accurate & plenty off horse power. :D

2. .308 win is a good cal., found you need to keep an eye on bullet weight.

Have seen 180gr drill straight thru a pig (no bone) without slowing down ----without wound channel.

Light bullet 150gr with soft point for thin skinned game etc.

Weaver 2.5 to 7 wide view scope great scope. My mate had one years ago and was excellent hunting in thick bush.

G'day barbender
l remember when kmart and myer sold firearms and ammo
l have in the past had work done by Peter Schwartz who is the winchester gunsmith now or was last time l heard

l'm a fan of the 30-25 which was my mentor (uncles) favorite deer rifle out to 200 for head shots
l do not think you would go wrong with a 6.5 in whatever case you chose, l have a swede and a 6.5x284 and TBH if l could only have one it would be the 6.5x284, in the right rifle this is why https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taRMw9NN8CU
as for your savage setup l cannot see anything wrong with it as a combo with the weaver for a stalker :drinks:

Are you wanting to rebarrel your 25/303 to 6.5 MM case or you would buy a rifle in this caliber? Weatherby make a handy 6.5/300 WM or the 6.5 Grendel is a very nice case to cover both ends of the performance spectrum.

You should have no problem using a 308 on deer, it is legal and effective.

they certainly dont Tassie and l'm talking from first hand experience ;)

set yourself up a .5" moa gong at a distance you regard as a good long shot, so at 500 a 2.5"-3" gong and shoot it often,
you wont be dreaming about it for long
l shoot an 8" gong at 800, awesome fun especially for people who have never done it

Put one on the right spot in the deer and I'm sure it'll be just fine
