30-06 test shoot, Nathan Foster old vid

Post by marksman » 07 Jun 2020, 9:56 pm

l found this old vid of Nathan Fosters interesting
he has tricked up an old Parker Hale m98 in 30-06 for a client and is giving it a test with 150gr sst's, some of my favourites ;)
l have myself found the sst's to work exactly the same as in the vid although l do understand its not been the same for others  enjoy

Thanks marksman. They certainly do a lot of damage, even at over 300 metres.

Great video. Thanks for posting.
The calibre might not be the most efficient - but I love mine...I’ve currently got a 12mm plate out at 600 that I’ve posted elsewhere and to look at the 223 strikes on it at that distance, it looks like someone squashed a moth on the plate...the 06? I swear - 168gn zmax was .5mm from going through and the indent is almost an inch across ...you read about energy retainment but to see it like that, just reinforces the 06’s ability for quick, clean, non suffering kills.

I have found the terminal performance of the SST to be excellent even for longer shots. I have used them in a 300 Win Mag and a 308. What I have found is I had trouble getting them to group well, turning a 1/2 inch rifle into some thing that struggled to get them all within an inch of each other.

Just watched the clip...yes a good amount of damage...

What is the equivalent bullet in 7mm (if they have one)...?
I just use 120 Vmax or 110 TNT's when i get the opportunity to hit goats but have never shot one past 200m...

And how is this for an SST...check this "bullet" out--watch from 3-4 mins for a laugh... ...talk about the six million dollar man...i can hear the metallic electronic sound effects in my head as he runs
(Not sure about how tender that goat meat wouldve been cooking it on high heat just after having killed it though--not something ill do thats for sure...!!...)

Edit...here is the link...watch from 3-4 mins for a laugh if you havent seen it already...

SST can be pretty devastating if they hit bone up close on goats. I usually don’t worry about meat of the front, I just take the back legs cause of the damage .At distance they work very well in my 6.5x55 ,nice size exit wound like Nathan’s even at the 220 yards distance I nailed one at . I tried putting up a picture but the site won’t accept it . I think for meat I’d probably use 140 sp Speer as their very accurate but not as expansive

Thanks stix and taz for the pictures. You’ve covered beer and hot women, all that remains now is some gun porn and I’m set

Back on topic, sst’s can be very violent when driven at good velocity out of a 30-06 or something like a 270. Out of a lower velocity cartridge they help with good expansion at distance. So for culling their good but I would use a soft point for less damage if going for meat. At least that’s been my experience on goats

I was only testing the forum to see if pics would work. :drinks:

Back on topic - I saw a guy shoot a roo recently with a 180sst in a 300win...it was one of the most insane things, the noise was painful even with earplugs in...the projectile penciled the roo and we saw what looked like to be a bucket full of earth explode behind the animal. The bolt could not be opened - until a rubber mallet was employed and the shooter swore he’d broken his shoulder.

The shooter pulled the rest of his reloads and found he was - TEN grains over maximum rec load!!!!!! I don’t even know how he compressed it in the case. He swore he’d got over 80 gns out of the cases....he’s very, very lucky.

I honestly don’t know and he was very embarrassed about it all...I bet he doesn’t ever do it again lol.
I think he made mention now that his bolt face or race is twisted as it’s not sliding the same - so he’s prob ruined his rifle.

if this is your mate with the tikka Tassie try another bolt in it, the lugs may be a tad set back :unknown:

this is not that hard to do especially with older eyes, 10 grains over is one graduation on balance beam scales
l see it as a mistake that we all could have done, learn from it and move on

and no l haven't ever done it :drinks:

No, wasn’t a tikka - was a rem700 I believe. Friend of a friend kinda thing. It’s knocked his confidence with rifle - think he may bin it based on 3rd hand discussions...
