Projectile question

Post by Harrynsw » 19 Jun 2020, 10:45 am

Hi folks
Iv just got the feelers out. I have a question for the projectile gurus...in the safe I have hunting rifle in 6.5 creedmoor, 20 inch barrel and 1 in 8 twist (I'm assuming, there's an 8" stamped on the barrel with the other relative text).

Question is, in the above configuration, what be an ideal projectile weight to push down the barrel? Have not yet decided if I want to go ahead and make my own or just buy of the shelf.

What type shooting is the Q ?
I’ve got 3 x loads for the 260.
95’s, 120’s and 140’s - 120’s appears to be most accurate for me with 140’s very close behind. 120’noslers BT perform well on roo.
I just procured some 147’s eldx to develop... for long range Paper...versatile round but need to define shooting wants and needs.
Tikka .260 (Z5 5x25/52)
Steyr Pro Varmint .223 - VX 3
CZ455 .22 & Norinco .22 (vtex 4-12, bush 3-9)
ATA 686 U/O 12g & Baikal S/S 12g.
Adler a110 reddot
Sauer 30-06 - VX 3

I use to run Bergers 130 gr VLD in my SA 260, Great bc and a good hunting projectile.

No need to go real slow and heavy

Heavy ? Wasn’t an original parameter in your query.
As per Stix Q - why?

Nope. Not necessarily.
Force = mass times acceleration...a faster / smaller projectile can beat (In regards to force) a heavier But slower projectile.

I was thinking 120 based on your intended use .....I tend to think that sometimes heavier bullets can be made tougher and you may end up with over penetration, and a lot of the bullets energy is wasted instead of being delivered to the deer , pigs ........I tend to think along those lines

Heaviest I've used in my 6.5's is 170gn bullets.

hey harry , projectile choice can be a can of worms ;) i shoot a 6.5x55 with a 23.5" barrel . i've used 140sst's, nosler 120 bt's on game , mostly goats and a couple of pigs . 140sst's work good for me for various game weight , the 120bt's being quite explosive . but you might get better speed out of your 20" barrel with a 120 bullet weight . hornady also make 123 and 129 gn sst's ,and a 129gn sp interlock. the go-to bullets according to nathan foster are the nosler partition's , but these aren't cheap. the most accurate and resonably priced 140 i've shot is the speer spitzer. i've yet to use these on game though
a good mate of mine shoots the 123gn sst out of his 6.5x55 zastava and reckons they knock down deer real well . i think i recall these were designed with the 6.5 CM in mind . with good bullet placement any of these would do ...

They are Hornady 160gn RN, very similar to the original 156gn RN bullet (bullet is the correct term for the specific type of projectile fired from rifles and handguns), and the cast Lee 170gn "Cruise Missile". I'm not aware of any bullet heavier than the Cruise Missile in .264".

My Swedish 18" M94/14 Carbine, 29" M96 Rifle, and 24" M38 Short Rifle all have the same 220mm twist rate as far as I'm aware, about 8.5"-twist.

Berger make a 156 grain hunting bullet, from a ballistics point of view that would be hard to beat.

If you're interested in the Cruise Missile, this is where I got my mould.
https://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item/000066.5swed/6halfmm-swedish-170-grain-double-cavity-reproduction-mold
It throws bullets well over-size so you can size them down to suit your rifle, around .272".

At a buck apiece they're not too expensive either.
https://brtshooterssupply.com.au/products/berger-6-5mm-144gr-lr-hybrid-target.html

Lapua do a 155gn also, but they're getting expensive.
