What speeds are the 170’s coming out at ? I imagine there’s some significant drop over Even very short Distances...

It throws bullets well over-size so you can size them down to suit your rifle, around .272".

Baby steps...if I rush out and buy everything there's no fun in it, I put a deposit on the rifle in November last year and only just picked it up, spent a few months looking at scopes ( that was like looking at porn when I was a young teenager, I really enjoyed that ) i also still need to get rings and bases to mount the scope.

I havnt yet decided if I want to press my own or just go factory ammo. Life is busy with kids and work, heck I only get to hunt a couple times a year.

So it's something small I can focus on and look forward to in the back of my mind fantasizing about trajectories, tight groups, expanding projectiles and looking at ferals through scopes.

I shoot them subsonic, though I have tried them at higher velocities in other rifles. My subsonic 95gn load in the M38 is 11.5MoA (the 4th dot on my BDC - about 330mm) lower at 100m than my 2960fps 95gn load.
If I were looking to push them hard I'd powder-coat them.

I shoot the 147gn ELDM at 2220fps in the 24" M38. Norma factory 139gn FMJ runs 2460fps in the same rifle, the 95gn VMax is doing 2960fps. I haven't chronoed anything in the M96 or M94 as yet but I would expect a little more from the 29" and a little less from the 18" barrels.

The BC is going to be similar to the Hornady 160gn, say .283-ish.
A 200m zero at 2200fps from the M38 is about 75mm high at 50m, should climb to about 130mm high at 110m, drop to about 210mm low at 250m and about 530mm low by 300m.

In comparison, the 147gn ELDM at 2260fps is 60mm high at 50m, 95mm high at 110m, 70mm low at 250m, 360mm low at 300m.

I bought the 170gn mould specifically because it throws very over-size bullets that I can size to suit some very worn milsurp bores, not for any other purpose.

Do you get to do any recreational shooting outside of hunting? If you're only shooting 20-odd rounds a year it's not worth loading your own.

Maybe 3 times a year...could be more if I started loading my own...time will tell.

That is the biggest part of reloading, being able to shoot a whole lot more :-)

I love it, I find satisfaction in it, but allocating time is very hard, that is if I want to shoot at meaningful distances. I guess I could buy a pistol and hit the indoor range in the evening.
Work is 6 days a week, roughly 65 hours a week, Sunday is family day, otherwise my kids won't know who I am.

Mate I have a 1:8 twist 6.5 Creedmoor and my rifle loves the Hornady 143 ELD X. Shoots under half inch at 100m.
Another alternative to the Hornady pills is the Speer 140gr. They also go well although not as good as the Hornady.
