308 Aussie Outback 165gr GameKing

Post by Vone » 22 Jun 2020, 7:01 pm

G'day all,

Testing out some different ammo for my Tikka T3x 308. Thought I'd give Aussie Outback 165gr GameKing a go for both target and deer hunting.

Anyone know how they go out of a Tikka T3x? Any other suggestions for well priced all round 308 ammo would be much appreciated.

Cheers

this factory load shoots well out of most rifles i've heard . shot very well out of a sako A7 i had . the only down side is it can be hard to get at times cause it is popular

Don't want to hijack the thread but were you happy with the A7( roughtech?) Bigrich?

Mate I am obviously not Bigrich however I have a Sako A7 Roughtech pro, albeit in 6.5 Brittany. Fantastic rifle mate, 1/2” groups all day long. Thoroughly recommend it. I’d buy another one in a heartbeat.

Fabulous rifle, mine wasn’t the roughtech, just a synthetic stock,a cross between a tikka t3 and a sako 75 basically. The magazine was a bit short on length for bullet seating, and it didn’t like 150 gn projectiles. It was quite light, and could beat you up a bit when shooting heavy loads off the bench doing load development. But extremely accurate, slick and a great trigger.

How much do you want to spend on a box? I'm shooting .308 hornady 165 sst and they are between $65-75/20.

I dont mind spending a bit more as I dont get to shoot that much, but if you're sensing 100 down range a day.. well now... :)

It's been a good few years since I bought factory ammo.

Have been seeing reloading components creep up in price over the time, obviously.

But f***, $75 for 20 factory shots :wtf:
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

Hi Aliqua. I'm looking at spending about $50/box 20. Dont mind spending a bit more if I get good groupings with it.

I've used Remington CoreLokt before but found it was rubbish. 2 misfires in a box of 20

Also keen to get some advice on hunting v target ammo. If anyone can shed some light on what the actual difference is I'd greatly appreciate it. The guys at the gun shop tell me they are the same. Cheers.

Vone,

Don't know about the 168 Gamekings, but I am shooting the 1345 g Sierras OSA through my T3x superlite (308) and it loves them. Hits hard on pigs etc, too heavy for roos as they go through and the roo takes a while to realise it is dead. I love the OSA/Buffalo River ammo, good value, especially if you buy it in cans.

In general terms - hunting ammo is designed to expand on impact (mushroom) thus cause immediate and fatal damage once in the animal...this can be achieved via various means - hollow points being the easiest to visualise. Some ballistic tip ammo, sees the polymer top driven into the main Projectile body on impact - spreading the encased lead...nosler BT hunting comes to mind.

Target ammo can often pencil straight through an animal, causing an injury - long time suffering, slow bleed out, etc. target ammo - used to be considered a higher quality, as consistency was mandatory, but premium hunting rounds are also now demanding a better product.

For me - The issue becomes when some manufacturers claim their predominantly advertised target ammo can be used for hunting...I don’t want to injure or maim anything.

what Tassie said
and the rem core-lokt bullets are a good hunting bullet,
when you have miss fire's of factory ammo take them back to where you bought it and exchange it
do not take no for an answer or any crap saying that a couple in a box are acceptable, demand a refund for faulty components

Anyone tried the Hornady American Gunner? 155 gr I think, box of 200 for around $285. I’m thinking about getting some to put through my 7600 pump. They come in a few other calibers as well.

I’ve used the American gunner 308 in my Howa. Under an inch at 100 metres. So happy with that for bulk Ammo.

The 6.5 creedmoor and Grendel stuff shoots closer to 1/2 an inch at 100 in my rifles

A few mates at the range use the Outback stuff and love it, economical on cost and shoots well.

I'd strongly recommend reloading with calibers like this. You'll be able to tailor your own loads to what you want and it'll save you a bunch of money in the long run. I've got a Lee Classic Turret kit and love it, might be $500 up front but well worth it for quick and efficient reloading.

The best thing? If I want to let off 100 rounds in a range session I don't have to think twice about it. with rounds for my 45-70 and 450 Bushmaster at $3 or more a shot, I'm now paying 52c and 35c a shot respectively. That initial investment has been paid off fast.

Quick update. Tried some Aussie Outback Matchking and Gameking. Very happy with both. The Gameking gave me a slightly better grouping than the Matchking, but overall both were much better than the CoreLokt. Well worth paying the extra $10/20.

Buffalo river 165 gameking rounds are excellent. I recently tried them out on the range to a max distance of 500m. 16 out of 20 rounds grouped in 8" circle. Pulled the others like a 12yr old with a playboy. This weekend moving back to 600m. I'm curious to see how far back I can get before they loose consistency. I can guarantee that they are consistent @ 500m straight out of the box.

Yes , bloody great ammunition.
This three shot group was shot by another forum member out of a standard Blaser R8 in 308, with a 1.5-6 scope.

Testing out buffalo river gameking 165grn hunting rounds at 600m last weekend. I have been walking them back from 100m zero out of curiosity. Starting to spread a little at 600m, but still inside 6". Will be trying them at 700m next week. I stopped reloading after i purchased my first box of buffalo river 135grn hollow points. I only tested them out to 200m due to practicality.

The 165gr Aussie Outback was fantastic in my T3 hunter. 3 shots easily sub moa with the pencil sporter barrel.
That was until I messed with it and had the barrel shortened to 20” to make it a little handier scrambling up the steep hills chasing sambar.
Changed up the harmonics of the barrel. Now shoots 1.5moa, but it’s not the ammo.
Working up some new hand loads to test once the range is open again.
Try it out, and if it shoots good don’t mess with it!

I just bought ADI 308 135grain hollow point. I have not tried it yet but it should drop wild dogs easy.
