Sierra TMK v TGK

Post by jay76 » 07 Feb 2021, 12:07 pm

Hi.
I have a 308 and use 168g TMK at the range. I see sierra have a 165 TGK for hunting. When I look at USA forums a lot of people say that the TMK are very close to a Game King and they use the TMK for use on game. Is this correct.

I have found with some of the TMK rounds when used on game don't always expand this isnt a issue when head shooting. But honestly stick to the game king for eithical kills nothing worse than losing something.

TMK are a bit inconsistent especially at range when they slow down a bit they need to hit bone so it's far better for the animal to use a tapered jacket bullet .

The Gameking will be by far the better bullet for shooting animals as opposed to paper.
Many yrs back I shot a 'roo high centre of chest with a 168gn non tipped MK, about 200yds, walked down and the poor bastard was not dead.

IME Sierra Gameking bullets will consistently shoot 0.5 MOA and Matchkings sub 0.4 MOA off the bench, anyone who can benefit from that margin of accuracy hunting game from prone or offhand positions is a better man than I am Gunga Din.

If the deer are Sambar and the pigs are big Woodleigh protected Point hard pressed to find a better bullet anywhere in the world .
if the deer are red fellow chital stuff like that and the pigs are only medium-sized my pick would be Hornady SST 165 grain fantastic bullet out of a 308 and back when I was using them they were cheaper than a lot of Sierra bullets

You will find that the Match King has a smaller Metplat and a tougher jacket compared to the Game King. You can melt the plastic tip out of each and see the different size if you are inclined. A good bullet for hunting might be a Speer Hot Core which are economical and shoot well but you won't go wrong with Sierra GK either.

Hi Mate

I have found the game kings to be good in all calibres I shoot.
They are accurate as.
I have tried SST in my 308 and 300WM. I found they would explode at close ranges, say under 100 meters.
I call the game king and the Pro hunters: my 'Meat and veg". Always reliable and do the job. No fancy bells and whistles.

But if you can keep it simple and find one projectile for that rifle that shoots well, and not chop and change projectiles/loads, I garantee you will have less grey hairs.

Stick to the Game kings or Pro hunter they work.
