One standard for cartridge names?

Perhaps I'm just the noob with this, but I still think it's a good idea

I dunno about you guys but I lose track of where half the calibres are at if you get far into a shooting and cartridge conversation.

Some in inchs, some in mm.. different kinds of magnums, things that sound similar enough like .22, .223, 22-250 etc. but are significantly different...

I'm probably just having a whinge here, but is there any thing in progress to have a standard for cartridge names put in place?

Inspector is right... It is not as simple as Metric v. Imperial - you would still have things like .22 Hornet and .22K-Hornet. Just converting the calibre/case length to millimetres won't help, because the difference is in the shoulder of the case, not its dimensions.

Then there are calibres designated by nom. diameter and weight of the original black powder charge - how do you convert .32-20 for example, into metrics?

Then you have such oddities as the practice of measuring case diameter instead of projectile diameter (the .476 Eley comes to mind - it was later renamed .455 Eley, and there were further derivations...).

Then - how about bore diameter v. groove diameter? Calibres described by year of introduction (.30-06 comes to mind - slightly different from its predecessor, the .30-03)?

It is all too hard to hope for standardisation now... at least 150 years too late

That's where the yanks lost me with their naming conventions...

One .30 cal cartridge is designed at Springfield Army Base in 1906 so it gets called the 30-06 Springfield. Calibre + year + place, fair enough.

Then you get .308 Winchester - .30 Calibre + .008 rifling + brand, but no place or date.

Then you get .300 Savage - Calibre + brand, but no rifling, place or date.

Then you got 7.62mm names, cartridge lengths, American names, Russian ones, rifles, pistols...

It couldn't have been that hard for everyone to have a quick chat when they were naming these things, lol.

I'm not much of a historian, but I assume many cartridges were probably developed during war times by difference countries?

I don't imagine you just pop over to Russia or wherever in the middle of a war for a quick chat about rifle cartridges, lol.

I've spoken with a couple of yanks who said something along the lines of "I don't know metric, it's too complicated".

No problems if you're an Engineer, and educated in such things, but where I went to school, or at least where poor old mum and dad thought i went,
we learnt (or is that lernded), 1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 3/32, 1/4, 5/32, 3/16, 1/2 inch etc, I don't remember the ruler having .001" or 1/10" on it., then came Metric !!

Finally I bought a digital Vernier.

I don't know if this is a reflection of what they're teaching these days, but they do all tools in metric these days obviously. Socket sets in mm etc. and not inches.

Are they still teaching engineering in inches? I suppose it's the US perpetuating it still...

Listen carefully to older builders and you'll hear them using hybrid measurments metric AND imperial in the same measurement! Scary thing is I can understand them!

PSI, Kpa, Kg/CM, bar, ATM, inches, millimeters.

Grew up with them all and uderstand them all through neccesity, not very neat or efficient at times though.

Kahn,grab a copy of Cartidges of the World,there's a mind boggling plethora of descriptions and illistrations in there,a 6.5mm Ronezewski for instance,or
44-100 Wesson,7 x 66mm Vom Hofe Super Express,375/303 Axite,the list is intriguing to say the least.
