Hornady Sub-X 30-30Win

Post by Boundry Rider » 30 Aug 2022, 8:42 am

Anyone hear of or seen/used these in Australia yet?

I fell upon a Sub-X podcast surfing the net a while ago. Looks like an interesting product, all the R&D has been done already and there’s projectiles available for handloading too.

Shoot it out of your 0.308"-caliber rifle of choice!

I bought some a while back but haven't gotten around to testing them yet. I severely cut back on my centrefire shooting when the primer/powder shortages hit. Getting back into it now though.

From memory on my Hornady podcast they suggested the 308 use the 190G , but not sure I’ve only got a 30-30. I won’t be using them in the 30-06.
I can’t wait to see what the 336 shoots like as a .22 on steroids.
A 30 cal running at 1080fps would you need hearing protection?

I load subsonic in .30-30 and everything else, including .30-06.
I don't use hearing protection with full-noise .30-30 so it'll be your own preference. It is louder than .22LR as you're using eight or ten times more powder, you just don't have the painful sonic crack.

For the intended purpose, they’d do just fine out of a 30-30,308 or 3006. Take your pick.

So for the 30-30 do use trailboss?

Try 10 gr of Trailboss in your .30-30 if you've got it. If not, try 17gr of 2207.

That was my next question, would you add a filler and use AR2207.
I’ve always used max capacity powders in all my firearm reloads, but read somewhere years ago that if using faster burning lower case % powders to blend with a filler to prevent secondary ignition.
So Trailboss is still short supply?

No, do not add a filler, and the "secondary explosion" theory relates to reduced loads of slow burning powders in large cases.
I have run that 17gr of 2207 behind a 170gr cast bullet with a gas check in 3 different .30-30's for a 200m load for silhouette rams. I actually tried 15gr but it didn't knock them down consistently, so upped it to 17. It may not be sub-sonic but it's a really mild load that is accurate in my rifles.
It also prints point of aim with the standard barrel sights on the highest notch on a 20" carbine barrel. So not as "rainbow" trajectory as the "experts" will tell you. :sarcasm:

Isn’t this for lead though? Remember this is a heavy jacketed pill. But yeah I’d shoot it probably. I’ve been running 07 in my 308 under 125s out of a small ring, for service. Probs extend it to 155s after crunching in quickload

It's a bullet designed to expand at sub-sonic velocities so cast loads should work well for it.
The real intended use for it is in suppressed firearms in the U.S.

Yes, or AR2206H.

Trailboss hasn't been produced for two years, and may not be ever again.
AR2206H is a great choice for reduced loads though.
I wouldn't blend a filler though, drop the powder in then put the filler on top to keep the powder in the bottom. A tissue over-powder card can be useful to keep them separated if you aren't shooting them right away.
