Ever heard of a 192gn 303 FMJ projectile?

Post by Vince24 » 21 Oct 2022, 10:11 pm

Hi guys

Looking into the basement of my dear father in law, I have found quite a curiosity.

A 303 projectile (0.311), FMJ, weighting 192 grains.

Ever heard of such a 303 projectile, and who was producing this?

He does not remember where it's coming from and they are not in their original box.

Picture below, it's the one in the middle:
On the left is the SMK 174 and on the right the Lapua D166.

Could be for the 7.62x54R or the 7.7mm Arisaka.

You mean, projectiles pulled from military rounds?

Yes, it's possible. It could also be non-military but that'll take a lot of research to identify.
Could also be 7.62x53R or 7.65x53mm Argentine.
Is the bullet magnetic at all?
What diameter and length is it?

Why the "lol" ??
What's so funny?
A forum member came here and asked a question. It's probably even reasonable to surmise that they didn't know the answer.
Others took a punt, but clearly, you're the smart a-se who knows.

LOL, yeh, right.

Seriously mate? Did you even read what you wrote before you posted it or has it taken a dozen beers and a bottle of scotch today to loosen your sense of inhibitions to the point where you feel the need to become outraged on behalf of others who you dont even know have taken issue with what was written?

I would explain the context but your probably too small headed to understand.

It certainly looks like the PPU 190g, and the weight supports that as does the crimp groove and boat-tail. A similar weight of projectile is also found in the Jap 7.7x58 Type 92 cartridge for Heavy MG, but that one is a flat base at 203g as is the Belgian 7.65x53 180g Spitzer and 211g round nose.

Hi guys

thanks, you're wonderful, please don't fight!!! Our hobby should be a pleasure.
And I was not offended by the "lol".

So no wonder I would not find it on Google, the projectiles are weighting 192gn on average so this is what I had googled!
But indeed if you google 190gn then you find it, so thanks for the suggestion!
I had just never heard of that one!

By the way there is quite a bit of weight dispersion, on the 10 I have weighted, it was ranging from 191.0gn to 192.9gn !!

Now the next question is, what the best rifle to use up those heavy pills?
Have got only 59 of them.
the diameter is 0.310 according to my calliper.

Mosin 91/30, M39 or a Lee?

Unless there is an obvious answer to that question, I will keep them as a last resort: if no other projectile works well, I'll try those.

Cheers,
Vince

If I only had ten I don't think I'd use them at all, but you could likely load them as plinking ammo in any of the .30-cals. If they're magnetic I probably wouldn't use them in .308" bores though. If it's still in production though you could test them and if they shoot particularly well see if you can get more of them.
