222 versatility

Post by bigrich » 17 Dec 2022, 8:06 am

hey fellas , just wanting any opinions on mild 222 loads duplicating 22 mag , 22 hornet type loads . personal accounts and experience . i don't get much opportunity to chase rabbits in south east queensland, and am thinking of ditching my 22lr and using 222 as a more flexiable alternative . i tried trail boss in the hornet years ago, but the small hornet case was hard to get consistancy . speed was around 1550FPS . i'm thinking "soft" 222 loads of ar2206h or trailboss should work better in the 222 case

Try pushing an air rifle pellet in the neck and using a primer to fire it....it works....

Pretty popular.

My load for 223 is 7.6 gr AS50n behind a 55gr SP. About 2000fps.

I used Trailboss under 40 grain ZMax to clean up rabbits on a small property where noise was an issue. You need a very frangible bullet to work properly and you need to work to get good accuracy. I found subsonic loads a waste of time. Loads with speeds between 2000 and 2500 were nice and quiet relatively, and could dispatch bunnies or feral cats.

Dunno about loading a .222 down but I think my .222 is the most versatile rifle I own :drinks:

Just been through the process of loading down my .222. Forget trying to duplicate .22mag. You won't find a bullet frangible enough at that low velocity, unless you miraculously come upon some JHP bullets that are normally used for 22mag ammo.

I tried the Speer 40gr spire point because they are cheap. You have to drive them at 2700fps or more to get any expansion.

I've now settled on the Speer 46gr Flat nose bullet intended for the .218 Bee with tubular magazines. Thanks BigPete!

The large meplat works better at the lower velocity. I have them going at 2500fps with 21grs of AR2206H. This is equal to a .218Bee factory load. Fine for inside 100m which is all I want them for. They are cheap which is appealing.

There may be super duper tipped bullets out there that might work but I'm not spending big dollars on them.

I'm just using 55g SPs. @ about 2000fps. Cut the tips off them. The couple of foxes I shot with them were bang flops at shortish ranges. Under say... 80 yards
