Scrub Bull Cartridge

Ok Boys and Girls. This is for a future buy of mine. What Cartridge would you guys recommend for scrub bulls and the odd Buffalo. I know they have been taken by everything from a 22 to a 700 Nitro, But what do the guys who have taken them regularly use ? I know one guy who has done this before and swears by solids in a 30-06 but I'm thinking something like a 375H&H, something I can justify to the WA cops ..

460 Weatherby Magnum. With 124 grns of 4350 and a 500 grn Hornady SP will break both there shoulders and literally knock them of there feet. Absolutely Devistating on Buff and Scrubb Bulls. Cheers, Baz .

308-208Grn Pill or a 6.5x55-160 Grn Pill all day everyday anything more is overkill IMHO

Mate I have the same picture in mind and it will be a 9.3x62Mauser cartridge. There are some pretty good rifles chambered for it and it falls just below the 375H&H in power. The case is roughly the same as a 30-06 and you can get around 2,400fps out of a 250gn bullet or go up to 300gn. My only decision now is which rifle. By the way it's a bloody good pig cartridge too, and will reach out to 200m or a bit more if you want.

That's pretty heavy/long for a .308 though right?

Would many have the twist fast enough to shoot it well?

I thought 160-180gr was usual .308 territory?

I like 150 and it kills most everything in Oz but a 1in 10 will stabilize UP TO A 220grn pill :ugeek: :geek: :ugeek: seen a 190 grn 1 shot kill on a scrub bull last year was clean fast and very effective

It's at the top end, but really comes down to the bullet.

A particular long 210gr VLD match bullet probably isn't going to fly in your average hunting rifle (and to be fair whoever built it as a hunting rifle wouldn't have intended it to).

A 210gr hunting bullet though will have a much different ogive, be shorter, probably a shorter boat tail or flat base, less prominent tip (soft point or wide hollow point) etc.
What is this "too many rifles" you speak of?

"I thought 160-180gr was usual .308 territory?"

More recoil from heavy bullets too don't forget.

No point shooting 210gr for the sake of it when a 150gr will do the same job.

Easier on the shoulder, and wallet.

I'm curious about this too, not the bloke in the dress HAHAHA id rather forget i saw that!!!

Would the .338 WM do a good job on em? I chose it for Sambar hunts over in VIC as it shares the same trajectory as your .308's and .30-06's but it'd be handy if I could take it up NT as well.
I really hope Export isn't actually Exported, mighty embarrassing for WA, hahaha I'll still drink it though

I've often wondered how my .577 snider would go on something big. It may be a bloody big pill but it moves very slow and is soft lead, after a lot of fiddling it is 4" accurate at 100m but anything other than soft lead and the skirts break off and it becomes minute of barn door.

But then they did used to hunt elephant with them..........................

I'll stick to my .300wm.

The old "what's a suitable buffalo cartridge" is an ongoing and heated argument. Anything from the .270 to .5+ calibres depending on who you ask.

.338 WM will do it. Personally I wouldn't go any lower than that for a regular Buffalo rifle.

Anything left of those deer after you hit them with it? ;)

I think more than a couple Snider users became bloody smears in the grass trying to kill old Tembo with a 577 lead pill,
