Recommend me a ballistic program

Post by Baldrick314 » 21 Jun 2014, 1:42 pm

I finally got to test out my chronograph today and got velocity readings for my 308. When I came home I plugged the figures into two different ballistics programs along with the details of my projectile and both gave me results different to what I know to be true.

Both programs reckon the rifle should hit 2" high at 100 yards when zeroed for 200 with the velocities I put in. My rifle shoots 1.5" high at 100. I got the environmental settings (temp, humidity, air pressure, altitude) as close to my conditions as I could. Is this the general margin of error you'd expect or am I doing something wrong?

The programs I used were Sierra 6 and Point Blank

The best and most accurate one I have found. As long as you imput the correct data.

There is one for you iPhone that uses the jbm platform called Ballistics advanced edition its not bad as you can true your dope and it becomes a very accurate algorithm

I'm using the Strelok app on my Galaxy and it's does the job.

A feature I really like is you can pick a reticle and set your zero distance. Then when you enter extra distance and wind to tell it what your shooting at it will show you the point of impact on a picture of your reticle.

Lapua do a free one, if you just want something simple for drop when mucking about at difference ranges it's good.

That's all I use mine for, nothing crazy accurate though.

Ditto. I've used it across half a dozen calibres and it's been consistently accurate.

I print cheat-sheets for my calibres and take them to the range instead of mucking around with apps on the phone at the range.
