.308 win vs 30-06 - Same recoil, more whip?

Post by pmomd » 30 Sep 2013, 3:38 pm

Hi guys,

Wanting to double check how .308 and 30-06 compare in a couple of ways after getting some strange(?) feedback from my local gun store.

I've been shooting .308 for a while which I'm ok with but to be honest it's probably at the upper limit of my recoil tolerance.

I'm considering getting a Ruger Hawkeye in 30-06, and am wondering about how it handles.

Speaking with the sales guy at my local gun store I obviously asked how recoil from the 30-06 compared to the .308. The guy said that recoil is the same, but that I would notice more muzzle rise when firing the 30-06.

To my eye (which is more on the novice end of the scale than the expert end) the 30-06 seems like a significantly bigger cartridge than .308? Not sure how you can gain more rise without more recoil?

Is his feedback sounding right?

Cheers.

Not sure where he's getting more muzzle rise without more recoil from?

What's causing the muzzle to rise other than recoil... :?

Not that I've done a side by side with the two, but... For the same bullet weight 30-06 has about 10% more powder than .308 win.

That says 10% more recoil to me.

Obviously the muzzle rise fairy. She flies invisibly underneath rifles barrels until you fire then she pushes the barrel up.

30-06 is her favourite to make jump more than others.

On the subject of recoil though, yes, the 30-06 will have more recoil than a .308 when shooting and equal weight projectile.

As above, 10% or so sounds about right.

In terms of performance .308 and 30-06 are much the same. Where 30-06 has the edge is that it will shoot heavier pills than the .308.

.308 will top out at about 180gr pills, where the 30-06 can handle up to 220gr or thereabouts.

If you don't need to shoot the heavier bullets, there's not really any reason to go with a 30-06 IMO.

Whether or not you want that and think you can handle 10% more recoil, that's up to you.
See you on the firing line.
