Custom HPs, Is this feasible ?

Post by Die Judicii » 26 Sep 2014, 7:58 pm

Would it be feasible / successful to put the likes of .308 or 30/06 projectiles in a lathe and center drill the tips of PSPs to create your own HPs ???

Just wondering,,,,,,,,

I suppose it's possible, just not sure why you'd bother, give it a go and let us know how they shoot.

Yes it would work. You'd need to adjust load data.

Make sure you only place the projectile in the lathe and not a loaded cartridge! ;)

You would need a small lathe chuck and it would be hard not to mark/ indent the projectiles. I would make up a round collar to evenly spread out the clamping force and stop it being over tightened.

Why would you want to do such a thing anyway?

Been there done that! So to speak. Had badly mushroomed soft point .308 highland 150gr. Did not use lathe though as these were loaded cartridges, tried multiple means including pencil sharpener, files, scalpels etc. ended up cutting whole tip off, filed flat until touched copper jacket. Started simply spinning over sized drill bit with my fingers, seemed to self Center every time then found bit to neatly fit inside jacket tip and again slowly spun drill bit with fingers, and measured with verniers for equal depth only went down 2.5mm. Did this to 20 rounds, shot better groups than the deformed/ mushroomed tips, never impact/game trialed though

Thanks one and all for the input.
Was just wondering, and kicking the idea round in my head.
I don't reload yet, but when I start, I might explore that avenue a bit.

I just think it might be fun hitting crows etc with a .308 HP

Speer 130g HPs are available to buy. Might be an easier option.

Weight the projectiles afterwards for your load data then yes.

Sounds like a lot of effort like has been said but if you want to go for it :)

Doable... as for being successful I guess the problem is you're really just drilling a hole in it without any info on what the result will be, right?

Bullet makers will have done all the testing, ballistics computing, blah blah blah and come up with the right hollow point. Not just popped a whole in.

That's my thought anyway.

And a number of other decent affordable options.

Berger, Nosler CC, others...

Whatever keeps you busy though :)
