Superformance Varmint faster than "conventional ammunition"

Post by Techc » 02 Oct 2013, 6:41 pm

Hi folks,

I'm afraid I might have been the victim of some marketing here, so best run it past the experts.

Looking up some ammo for my .223 I find the Hornady Superformance Varmint. The spiel from the website has all the usual stuff on accuracy, and...

"Superformance Varmint is 100 to 200 fps FASTER than ANY conventional ammunition."

What dictates "conventional ammunition" exactly? Surely to get faster bullets Hornady are just using faster/more powder?

Why couldn't a hand loader do the same or better than this magically fast ammo?

I thought the difference was that the powder was a blend? Not something you want to do at home I guess.

Combining powders with different burn rates could go badly...

They could. And they could tailor the load to best match their rifle.

Handloading's always better if you've got the time.

I would say so.

I'm yet to see anyone selling blended powders though?

It's a Hodgdon powder if I recall correctly. Pretty sure its just sold as one of many in their powder lineup though, it's not marketed as a "blend" or anything like that in a big way.
