17HMR Vs 22WMR

Post by Westy » 19 Oct 2014, 11:41 am

As the title says which would you prefer the 17 HMR or the 22 WMR :| :| :| I'm heading toward the oldskool 22WMR with the 30Grn Hornadys but both are a neat Cal, it's for my wife and as usual she's says what ever you thinks best????Great that's a fat lot of help :o  :o

LOL I hate that line "what ever you thinks best". Im old school enough to go the 22 mag route. I see the advantages of the 17HMR, but I like a little bit more lead in my pipe !

I'm the opposite, had both and after shooting my savage varmint 17, over my brno 22mag, the 17hmr is my pick only 19gr ballistic tips so limited on game, where as the magnum with 30gr plus. 17hmr amazingly accurate and flat shooting out to 120m of all my rifles past and present I enjoy shooting it the most, consistent performer, 22mag still has its place just that place ain't in my safe anymore

I can't tell you what's best as I have never owed a .17HMR, but my Ruger 77/22 in .22WMR has been one of my favourite rifles for the last 15 years.

I found it great for foxes, cats and even as a back up roo gun. Back up might be the wrong words as it has dropped more roos then I could keep count of ( legally). Most shot in the head but it can still drop them with a good chest shot.

I found in general the .22WMR isn't as accurate as the .22LR and by the sound of things the .17HMR. It wasn't till I started using hornardy's 30gr ballistic tipped ammo it started joining the holes up at 50yds.

The other downers are ammo cost and since I only use the Hornady ammo it's been hard to get in the last few years.

Thanks guys,

The only way I'd use a 22WMR is with the 30 grn hornadys or 25 grn nxs. I love the idea of the HMR but 17 grns seems hardly enough IMHO.

The first rifle I ever bought after starting work was a Marlin 22 mag with the gold trigger, it was bloody awful and couldn't shoot for s**t, but I hear the 30 grn V-max pills have changed the anti and shoot a nice group out to 100m. That's what I'm hearing. Thanks Timbo.

(As you already know) though the 17HMR is about velocity, not projectile weight.

This is how the 30gr hornady's shoot at 50 yrd in my ruger. The 25gr don't shoot half as good.

I was 8-9 months without being able to get the 30gr ammo (so stock up if you get it)mean while the 25's were on the shelf, so I think everyone is onto them.
