17HMR WoW

Post by Westy » 07 Nov 2014, 8:02 pm

Well I also too k the wife new 17HMR out today as she had to work and I have to say "WOW" Great little calibre that seems to punch way above it's weight. I set it high at 50m say 3/4" or 20mmm for Mauser  but what seemed weird was it was shooting 1" (25) high at 100m so since there was no like 0% wind I have to ask are these things still climbing at a 100m :?: :?: :?: For a laugh I held a zero @ 200 and it was shooting 4" (100) low WoW again for this little cartrage. Now in the wind it might be a whole lot different but I'm wrapped in this thing,if the wife thinks she's getting a go them she can take a number!!!!

It is a go to calibre for me with the spotlight. I am supplied ammo, so cost isn't a factor.

Should be quick enough to work out, what ammo were you shooting?

About 180m is where the wind can really start tossing them around I read.

Impact velocity at 200 is still about 1,400fps if I remember correctly.

Ok so... In test 24" barrel muzzle velocity is 2,550fps.

Zeroed for 100m trajectory is:

000m -1.5
025m -0.5
050m 0.1
075m 0.3
100m 0 (zero)
125m -0.9
150m -2.5
175m -5.0
200m -8.4

Peaks at about 75m then.

-

Zeroed for 200m trajectory is:

000 -1.5
025 0.6
050 2.2
075 3.5
100 4.2
125 4.3
150 3.8
175 2.4
200 0 (zero)

Matches your experience pretty closely in the bold there.

-

That'll be it, give or take a few FPS and related rise/drop depending on barrel length. The difference would be minimal though.

Definitely holding it's own to 150m looking at that.

200m though... Hmm. The wind plus that drop, things would be getting a bit howdy-doody.

Thanks for that Tiiger. So now I know it's just not me!

What program did you use to work that out?

Cheers,

I zero for 100 and never use it past 150 on our small game down here.

Top calibre.

No probs.

Using JBM Ballistics trajectory calculator for the table.

Never use past 150m because of inaccuracy or it's ineffective on target over that range?

Cheers.

Too inconsistant after 150, in both areas, just my humble opinion.

But can you be bothered chasing the empties, sitting down and actually reloading?

I am over it, cost is no issue as I am supplied but locally I have seen it for 35-40 cents a round in bulk.

50/50 really, both have their pluses, if I had to choose it would be the .223 but damn I would miss the little fella as it is a fun calibre to just go out and shoot.

If you don't like doing it that's understandable. It can be a pain.

If it's a hobby you like and it saves you a buck at the same time, great.

Not saying one way is best.
