.577 Tyrannosaur

Just wondering if anyone knows a bit more on the history or development of this round.

Wikipedia is usually ok for this stuff but was very limited for this cartridge.

The .577 Tyrannosaur or .577 T-Rex (14.9×76mm) is a cartridge developed by A-Square in 1993 for professional guides that escort clients hunting dangerous game. The cartridge is designed for use in "stopping rifles": A rifle intended to stop the charge of dangerous game. The 577 contains a .585-inch (14.9 mm) diameter 750-grain (49 g) Monolithic Solid Projectile which when fired moves at 2,460 ft/s (750 m/s) producing 10,180 foot-pounds force (13,800 J) of muzzle energy.[1] The production model from A-square is based on their Hannibal rifle platform.

Fair enough in theory I suppose, but still wildly overpowered? Everyone's probably seen the video of the guys firing this and just about all of them literally get knocked on their asses.

Anyone know of places where this was actually adopted for use? Wondering if it was just a publicity stunt more than anything else?

Yep, seen the videos. Looks like it's in the UAE somewhere right? Lots of shooters dressed in that garb anyway.

Dunno about the history but it sure sends them flying

Heres some links on the T-rex mate ( The famous Jeff Cooper said he'd call it the ".577 Dundee" )

It takes a 14 pound rifle to fire this .750 grain, 14.9 mm round and that frame is far too light for the task. This massive solid slug ,departs the barrel at 2460 feet per second and delivers a whopping 10,180 foot pounds of energy at point blank range. It delivers a 220 pound kick to the shoulder of the happy wielder.
