Westy from that i can see that the .204R will shoot a 40gr at 3754fps and the .223 the same weight bullet at 3695fps, as you say barely any difference in velocity but if you look at their trajectory there's more of a difference particularly in the wind, nearly 2 inches less drop and more than 5 inchs less wind drift at 300m

But let's face it, drop is not an issue if you know your cartridge and 300m is a fair way in the field shooting off the mirror or the bonnet

Hey Big C 300m isn't that far in the field really. A lot of time we range things by eye that are in fact further than we thought. Last weekend we were looking at a target that we thought was 300m and when we ranged it, it turned out to be 435m a lot of dead ground up in them hills. And then there are the guys who tell you they head shot a X at 500m and when you ask how far away was that light post is they tell you 250m and you know it's only 80m!!!!! 300m is still a big shot off handed!!!! going to try the 223 with 40's but then again I resisted the 17hmr for years and now I'm wondering why????

I agree 300 isn't that far in some situations for some people but if you've only ever shot 50m on an indoor range it's a loooong way.

I used to shoot 300m prone every 3 weeks both off a bipod and prone with a sling. Most of us shot our best scores at 300 (100 was shot standing , 200 sitting) but others who would shoot A grade scores normally would shoot B grade scores at 300. Guess its a psychological thing.

I've shot centerfire silhouette and standing and firing at a Ram at 500m is less scary for me than trying to shoot a tiny group at 200y.
