Apollo wrote:You will get close to matching velocity of a .204R but remember the .204R is the .222R Magnum case with more powder capacity so the .223R can't make up for the loss in that area.

Barnes 30gr & 36gr Varmint Grenade's work wonders in a .223R at above and just below 4,000fps. At 150m they will blow the opposite side of a Roo's head off, tiny entry hole. BC of 30gr is .101 and 36gr is .149, tried using BM-2.

Berger 30gr FB Varmint BC is .119 and just as destructive pushed hard....better description is explosive but in a .22 Hornet very kind for meat & skins.

Going to .204R the Berger 30gr that I use has a BC of .156 and the 35gr a BC of .184 so the ballistics are much better than ever possible with a .22 calibre.

Short story... the .204R shoots flatter over a longer distance with the same weight bullet and much higher velocity that a .223R can't match.

This guy is heading in the right direction. Yes the 223 can approach similar velocities as the 204 but the 204 beats it in BC every time.
This adds up to less bullet drop and wind drift at distance.

that's fine, i have a good supply of 32gr Vmax and hornady brass plus 300 35gr bergers on the way and 200 39gr BK's too ;)

out of interest BFS what powder do you use for the sierra's? I haven't played with them before

Mine shoots fine with either 8208 or 2206H mate, either or as they both work well with the 39's for me.

Hmmm. I didn't have much success with either with lighter bullets in the CZ. Accuracy wasn't as good as factory hornadys do I tried 220 8 and although it doesn't give great velocity the accuracy is there.

Guess I'll have to go testing again.

There in is the one negative I can see in the .204R is that with such a variety of bullets to try you could easily wear out a barrel searching for a 1/2 MOA load with say 26gr VG, 32gr Vmax , 35gr Berger and 39gr Sierra BK. Pick one and shoot it may apply here.

Thanks BFS

Westy from that i can see that the .204R will shoot a 40gr at 3754fps and the .223 the same weight bullet at 3695fps, as you say barely any difference in velocity but if you look at their trajectory there's more of a difference particularly in the wind, nearly 2 inches less drop and more than 5 inchs less wind drift at 300m

But let's face it, drop is not an issue if you know your cartridge and 300m is a fair way in the field shooting off the mirror or the bonnet

Hey Big C 300m isn't that far in the field really. A lot of time we range things by eye that are in fact further than we thought. Last weekend we were looking at a target that we thought was 300m and when we ranged it, it turned out to be 435m a lot of dead ground up in them hills. :D ;) :D And then there are the guys who tell you they head shot a X at 500m and when you ask how far away was that light post is they tell you 250m and you know it's only 80m!!!!!   300m is still a big shot off handed!!!! :o  :o going to try the 223 with 40's but then again I resisted the 17hmr for years and now I'm wondering why????

I tell ya, I'm f***ing useless at ranging by eye.

At 300m I could be 100m off

I agree 300 isn't that far in some situations for some people but if you've only ever shot 50m on an indoor range it's a loooong way.

I used to shoot 300m prone every 3 weeks both off a bipod and prone with a sling. Most of us shot our best scores at 300 (100 was shot standing , 200 sitting) but others who would shoot A grade scores normally would shoot B grade scores at 300. Guess its a psychological thing.

I've shot centerfire silhouette and standing and firing at a Ram at 500m is less scary for me than trying to shoot a tiny group at 200y.
