Loose ammo in your pocket

Post by mikor » 06 Feb 2015, 12:46 pm

What do you guys think of walking around for a day with a handful of loose centrefire ammo in your pocket?

A primer couldn't go off from the kind of bumps they might get, right?

Any harm or problems to do so?

Actually, dangerous and slightly ridiculous - plenty of ammo pouches, belts, boxes or even a spare mag to carry rounds in. Invest in one, safety first!

I've done it for years, never any issues and I still do it with rimfire ammo at times.

Not dangerous at all, however on the hunt you make too much noise with it in your pocket if you are walking about.
I usually only keep ammo in the pockets if I'm getting about in a vehicle.

It would be a very unusual situation that would set off any primer . I have done it a thousand times without any dangerous issue. However what could be a potential issue is , rubbish getting onto the rounds like grit and getting into the chamber . If you experience what soldiers go through with belts of ammo carried externally you see that it is very hard to actually set off ammo mechanically without that sharp powerful pin fall directly in the right spot on the primer . Carrying ammo around is safer than carrying a can of petrol around . There are other minor risks like, loose some when running or laying on the ground or leaving some in your pockets and they go through the washing machine or like happened to a guy I new had some still in his pocket when he got pulled over for DUI .

I had a mate fall asleep drunk next to the campfire with a pocket full of 12g shells, nothing happened! he could have ended up with a few nasty burns if they did decide to burn, the pocket they were in had burned away and the shells were just sitting next to him

My concerns are, will I lose them and do they rattle and make a noise. They are designed to be safe until you pull the trigger.

Yes you could loose some out of a shallow pocket and yes large centre fire cartridges can make a bit of noise when moving quickly but rim fires and shot shells don't make much noise . I think a good compromise would be an Uncle mikes belt ammo pouch . One of these http://www.unclemikes.com/bags-cases/sh ... e-carriers

I don't do it anymore with centre fire ammo . Your body heat on the case can potentially affect the accuracy and grit and dirt can get into the chamber . Also it can be difficult in certain shooting positions to get a round out without dropping another in the dirt or on the floor of a vehicle . Walking around it's ok , but overall a belt ammo pouch is better in more situations as it can be taken off and used as a ammo container .

I've got to say I've never used an ammo belt, I usually have a full mag and a box of ammo in the pack (When I was more mobile) these days its a MTM case full in the vehicle when out blowing up bunnies or whistling/spotlighting foxes.

Not an ammo belt . A belt mounted ammo pouch . A spare box of ammo in a pack is a good idea also as it can also be brought out and placed on the ground in easy reach for prone shooting . I use the Uncle mikes fold down belt pouch because it's very silent and it's easy to get more rounds out. Ammo in an MTM case does tend to rattle slightly although a piece of foam in the lid stops that also I don't like the way the top edge of the plastic compartments rubs grime onto the brass over time. Not sure what is going on there but my MTM case's leave a black ring around the brass if moved about a lot so I put the foam in them to help stop that . In the vehicle a box is practical but for stalking I like Uncle Mikes pouch.

The 100 containers are great.

So much better than having 5 factory boxes stuffing around.

Yep for my type of shooting they work great. I also have 50 box ones too but generally use the 100 box version more.

I just got some polystyrene & drilled some 1/4" holes in about 2" and then some 3/8" ( I think ) about 1" down leaving a more or less stepped/tapered hole. I will finish it off with some red insulation tape to give it a bit of strength. Cheapest 223 ammo holder ever.

Absolutly aware that they will not go off, see my earlier post. But will no longer rattle in the pocket.

Just cut a bit of tape of one of the corner and it should be good to go (wet it with your tongue) then rub on glass or even your stock (may work depending on stock finish) or you could just use an empty stubby bottle
