Whistling bullets

Post by heron » 05 Mar 2015, 8:43 am

Occasionally when I fire a shot I get a bullet that gives a zippy little whistle as it goes off.

What's the cause of that?

Not an issue that I have experienced but I have heard about it happening. It has to be something about the open nose of the bullet one would think but not necessarily .
If you drill a hole across a bullet it will whistle . It's not a dynamic of projectile flight that I have ever needed to study so you got me .

Nifty invention by pro fox hunter Jim Halloway back in the 70's.

Designed for sub sonic rounds that help keep a fox still and allerted by the noise, not startled.

Who would have thunk it.

They whistle when coming towards you.

You sure you're not standing at the wrong end of the range?

if the whistle has a changing pitch.... then my friend you've experienced the doppler effect. Yup. it was flying past you, a ricochet.

Hi 1290,

Nah it wasn't a ricochet, just an even peal away and have seen some of the impacts.

No one has corrected me so I'm pretty sure I'm standing at the right end of the range too Old Fart

agree it must therefore be a defect or shape that disturbs the airflow....

Yes, you will not hear the bullet approaching - hence, if you HEAR it... the danger has passed by :?

The physics involved is very interesting;

if the target is 1000m away and the proj is traveling at an average of 3000fps = 914.4m/s

Therefore it takes the bullet 1000/914.4= 1.09 seconds to reach the target. For the sound of the hit it will then take another 1000m / 343m/s(speed of sound) = 2.92 seconds for the sound of the hit to 'return' to the shooter.

Therefore, from when you pull the trigger, it will take 2.92 + 1.09 =4.01 seconds for the shooter to 'hear' the hit. :ugeek:
