.457 WWG - New 45cal rimmed chambering!

Post by 1290 » 19 Mar 2015, 9:00 am

So SAAMI have recently (last year) ticked off a new 45 rimmed chambering (maybe its been around for a while as a wildcat??)

The pretty awesome sounding '457 Wild West Guns' aka 457WWG...

Sound interesting, but....

Its basically the 45 Govt. with an extra 1 tenth of an inch case length. Thats it. Is it worth it? or is it a matter of getting a round officially in your chosen name perhaps, given that it would offer what, a 'few' fps more potential than the 45-70, its less than the 45-90, a lot less than the 450Nitro??

Pro: you could easily ream your 45 single or double rifle
Con: you'll need new brass, reloading bits and load development...

Wonder if it will be rated for a higher pressure than 45-70. The old 45-70 govt needs to support anything from original trapdoors and highwalls all the way through to modern Marlins and Rugers. Always the risk of someone not reading the box and putting a heavy pressure round in a trapdoor, maybe different name and the extra 0.10" will stop that.

Mmmmm, sounds like a lot of effort for not much to me.

45/70 isn't lacking in punch as it is.

The guarantee of not reading it more like.

I bet you 3/4 the people shooting it wouldn't realise old and new are apples and oranges in that respect.

I notice ADI (not sure about others) provide 3 sets of data for cartridges like the 45/70.

45-70 Government (Trapdoor Rifles)
45-70 Government (Lever Actions)
45-70 Government (Modern Rifles)

So the information is there.... Hard to miss really.

Could be wrong but I think I remember something about Marlin doing it in their M336s somewhere?
