22-250 55gr or 243 55gr

Post by TPCKRT » 25 Mar 2015, 4:51 pm

Hi guys and girls.

I have a tikka t3 lite stainless on laybuy in .22-250
But ive started having second thoughts about wether i want the 250 or not.
I sold my 204 as i really wanted something that had a range of soft pointed projies.
I do alot of fox, goat and on occassion skippy control (all legit).
I had an old weatherby 243 a few years ago but only ever shot 80gr through it but it never thrilled me.

Question is what do you guys think?
2-3 of my properties have fallow deer on them aswell but i tend to use my 300wm for deer.

TIA.

Steve

in the same mass, the 223 has the edge, all things equal, with a higher sectional density of 0.157 against the 0.133 of the 243.... however the 243 has a velocity advantage so it somewhat evens the advantage out.

Unless you have a very slow twist 223, the 243 has it with the bigger heavier proj advantage....they are in a different class of cartridge regardless, with the 08 case giving almost twice the powder capacity

over the last 30 years i have had 4 243s and a mate of mine had a 22-250 he now has a 243

after seeing what the vmax 65g pills did on all things from rabbits to deer he was convinced real

quick .

and the funny thing is have a look at the ballistic tips bc the 6mm has a higher bc than the 22 call

for the 55g go figure so that makes the 243 flatter faster and harder hitting than a 250 .

300wm will obviously drop a fallow, but you must be getting a lot of meat loss.

.243 is legal for the 3 deer species as you know, so that's a tick for the .243 being more versatile, and will save a lot more meat than the 300.

I'd go the .243, load some 80gr pills and get an extra meal or two out of each deer.

Would come down to if you're going to use it for the Fallow IMO or stick to your 300wm.

That is a lot of gun for little fallow.

.243 gets my vote.

Just a great calibre all round in terms of cost, availability and the game it can take.

I would go the .243

58gr Vmax for a nice small projectile.

Don't own a .243 and not thinking to buy one but in this case you'd be better served choosing it over anything else. If buying a used one make sure you check the throat & barrel thoroughly as they have been known to burn barrels in the old days.

If you're running hot loads like .243 owners often like to do that's definitely true.

I load 60gn Partition bullets in my 22.250 , found then very good on pigs of any size when shot just behind the front leg on a slight angle to make impact with the heart area

One of the best shooters I ever owned was a .243. From rabbits to deer it would dispatch them all with quick, ethical results.
The winning factor with the .243 is its ability to load a large range of bullets, more today than when I had my .243.
I love the .223 but it isn't as strong as the .243 and you can load the latter to over 3000fps in some bullet weights.
There is one other thing to think about, the new .243WSSM (Winchester Super Short Magnum) which we can get in an AR-15 (the .243 requires the longer action of the AR-10).
If you are taking real long shots you can also try the .25-06 (.25 caliber in a .30-06 cartridge). A lot of Sheep hunters (300+ meter shots) like this one time wildcat round. Bullets and loading equipment as well as commercial ammunition is readily available here--would imagine it would be there too given the large area of long distance shots.

22.250 everything i shot with it dies on the spot, the animal has no idea if a 22.250 or 243 shot it. i have shot pigs goats foxes all died as soon as hit. you have a 300 anyway or have access to one. if cost is a factor go 223. no animal from roos down can tell what hit them using any of those 3. i dropped at pig full sprint at 300 yards. after it stopped rolling it didnt even quiver. using 55g projectiles. everyone normally who has a 22.250 or 243 says theirs is the best. no such thing. you go with what ever you want if $ is issue 223, if you get a 22.250 or 243 you wont regret any of them. point it at the kill zone nothing else matters hell ive shot heap of goats with a 22lr they dropped on the spot too.
