Thanks for the detailed replies guys.

I was sort of dabbling with the idea of the 300 win mag for doing some real long range stuff from time to time, but it would only be for fun and a bit of mucking about occasionally. If I could do that and get some benefit inside my normal 100-500m range then I might have gone with it.

Not smart to go with it though for some fun 1% of the time while making it more expensive to shoot and more difficult the other 99% of the time.

I am going to go with .308

They don't seem to do many bench / semi-heavy barrels in 30-06 though?

Hunting rifles obviously, but not so much if it's mostly for the bench?

yes the good old 06 is a forgotten treasure for this kind of thing and still has a very good acuate barrel life where as most magnums are gone in 1000 rounds

or under .

so a rem 700 long range in 30-06 fits the bill just about perfect and still under $1600 , they shoot heavy pills far better than a 308W too .

EDIT I just had a look and they have a 1:10 twist so the berger 190g would be good at 2800 to 2850fps with a bc of .566 it would be a cracker

it has 1000ft-lb at 900y and still supersonic at 1200y with good barrel life .

30-06 is also very, very versatile for the reloader. It really doesn't give much away to the 300wm when hunting, does everything just a bit better than .308, and easy to load nice and mild.
Different type of recoil, too. More a push than a punch. But, like anything a bit bigger, it's important to find a rifle that fits you properly.

Worth considering bore erosion in a range rifle, I have put 2K hot rds through a very accurate .308 without any loss of accuracy, no experience with the 300 but I reckon loading one up for max performance [and possibly max accuracy ?] may see you looking at a new barrel before that number.
