Yep, the numbers don't lie. I've got to drive 180's pretty hard (but I don't) to say inside a 6.5X47Lap shooting 130's in any kind of wind.

Good balance between recoil and power would make quite an effective hunting cartridge in a light mountain rifle.

I've bullt a 7X47 that's pushing 139gr Interbonds near 2900 and there's more potential there

That's unexpected.

I know it's a good cartridge but just by sheer weight you'd thing the 180 would have the edge against the wind.

I was going to say (making assumptions here) that the higher velocity was the winner in the wind but I see I had that completely backwards.

It's slower :unknown:

I have much to learn obviously

Well 180gr .308 has about the same BC as a 130gr 6.5mm (in the same style of bullet)

At a glance it seems like it would seem a .30 would be the winner but the 6.5x47 is a magic little cartridge.

I quite often shoot my 6.5x47 at the range, it is effective up to 800yards for me in reasonable wind. I shoot against 308s and in good conditions is very competitive

I haven't got the inclination to work it out but I'm sure one of the guys who likes the technical nitty gritty can give you all sorts of number on ballistics and drag coefficient and other big words to explain why it's slower but still better

He's talking about 180gr 7mm with a very sexy BC. not .308 180gr.

Cheers,
