Make a dummy cartridge or buy plastic one

Post by Kelix » 26 Oct 2013, 8:41 pm

Hey all,

I see my LGS that they do dummy cartridges for testing feeding and cycling your action and whatever...

About $20 for one though, for a bit of plastic :?

I can just make a dummy cartridge with a bullet, brass and no powder and primer... Will that last though?

Obviously a cartridge isn't intended to get fed dozen of times. Do you think the bullet will wiggle lose?

Or am I overthinking stuff and I should just cough up $20 for a dummy?

Eventually maybe... But so what? Load it again?

I'd say it would last long enough.

Worst that can happen is it comes lose, and you can resize the brass and seat it again next time you reload some ammo.

From a safety viewpoint I guess the worst thing that can happen is you accidentally pick up a live round instead of your dummy.

For $20?

It'll last you for ever. I'd just buy...

Make your own, then you can have a proper cartridge for seating depth reference for your rifle when your reloading in future.

Yep I have a home made one every rifle I load.
Makes setting the seating die easy.

Just put a heavy crimp on it if you can, or if you want to get technical, drill a hole in the base of the projectile, fill the case with body filler or Araldite
then seat it, it won't move again.

Ah, nice idea.

Thanks mate, that's what I'll do.
