Ammo safe in a house fire?

Post by fuggle » 28 Oct 2013, 9:13 am

Hi guys.

Everyone knows about the recent NSW bush fires of course.

It's got my misses mind working over time (and mine a little) to be honest about what would happen if the gun safe or ammo safe when up with a few hundred rounds in it.

I realise it's not going to be like machine gun fire for miles around, but there could be some risk for being nearby?

I'm not planning on burning the house down obviously but we're curious more than worried.

Cheers.

It will burn and pop, it doesn't do anything remotely like "firing" in the way it would from a rifle.

I would think if your house was on fire to the extend that all your ammo burns off, everyone would be well enough away from the safe/ammo that it wouldn't be a problem.

Google Mythbusters, they had a good go at trying to get some to explode.

There is a thing by the Sporting Arms and Ammunition Manufacturers' Institute which did a test on this for fire fighters going to houses which had guns and ammo inside.

Basically they got a 6 foot high pallet of a dozen kinds of ammo and set the whole thing ablaze.

Nothing spat more than a few metres.

You'd rather have hundreds of little bombs in a big metal box in the house? :P

I used to think ya ammo will just basically pop but recently I lost both of my parents in a house fire. They were preppers and reloaders and had thousands of rounds of ammunition stored, when the fire was burning down the ammunition started going off and bullets WERE flying, the majority did pop but a good portion of them shot off with some force actually hitting the firetrucks and breaking a few windows and lights.

I have also heard people say surplus ammo boxes are a good way to store ammo but these things were just riddled with bullet holes. According to the police and firefighters it was to dangerous to get close enough to the fire and had to let it burn down on its own.

The popping in fire seems to be pretty consistent for it I've now seen.

Youtube turned out to be good as always with people doing it.
