Hornady 160 gn Leverevolution

Post by Wm.Traynor » 10 Jan 2016, 8:07 am

Now that my PTA has been approved, I would like to ask a question about ammo for it: a Mossberg 464 :D

Are these bullets any good on pigs?

Hornady make good ammo across the board.

Shot placement is important as always, pigs can be tough, but 160gn at the kind of ranges you'll hunt with the 464 will drop them good.

160gr out of a 30-30 is enough for pigs, yep.

What sort of ranges are you hunting at? I know it won't be far obviously but are we talking up close and personal in the scrub or a bit more open field.

Hornady is great and all but the leverevolution isn't super cheap, and unless you're reaching out with it the extra 200 FPS velocity isn't really going to make much difference.

At 50m a regular old soft point will make piggie just as dead for less coin.

Just saying.

Hi Xerox,
A long shot would be 150 yards. After finding prices somewhere (I forget now) I am going to buy the bullets and use 2206H. On another topic on this forum the opinion was that Hodgdon's LVR powder was not worth another 100 fps. The dies arrived today :) Slowly it is coming together :)

If 150 yards is your limit it'll do fine for hunting.

Still carrying plenty of energy out to that distance to turn a pig into pork.

You could stretch a little further, but drop starts to get funky with the 30-30 much past that.

With 100 yard zero, 200 yard drop is about 8-9"

250 yard is 16-17" drop

300 yard is 30" +

You get the idea.

The 30-30 is a relatively low velocity cartridge which limits the range but at typical hunting distances a 160gr projectile is carrying plenty of energy.

At 50-150 yards it'll break bone all day long.

Breaking bone is the idea, Gregg :)
I always go for the shoulder shot. That way, they can't escape and their lungs are wrecked quick smart. Death is pretty quick.
