.219 Zipper

Post by snag » 15 Jan 2016, 9:04 pm

Just bought a lovely old gun in .219 Zipper. Does anyone have any experience with this cartridge? I'm a reloader and I think I can get dies for it? What's a safe starter? Any advice appreciated.
The pen may be mightier than the sword, but personally I prefer the .30/30 Winchester.

G'day snag,
Do you have a lever action or a bolt action? For the lever, the ADI data bentaz pointed out is a good, low pressure/velocity starting place. I used to have a No4 LE chambered for this, as well as a Martini, and used to load 34.0g of Du Pont IMR4320 for 3400fps using 55g PSP in the Martini, never chronied the Enfield. If you have a projectile in mind, I have access to a load database that includes this cartridge and could find some more info for you, Cheers.

Hey No1Mk3,
I got a Sportco barrelled Martini and I was planning on trying Hornady Vmax projs in 50gn and 55gn ('cos I already have them). How do you reckon 60gn projs would go?
Thanks,
Snag

Where is Andym?

He's just done a rebarrel project to .219

Might have some test loads to share.

G'day snag,
Sorry for the delay, work etc. As bentaz said, twist rate will govern bullet weight. My Martini had a custom barrell @ 1:14 and was good with 55g, so I didn't try 60's in such a slow twist. If you want to try 60's, some loads would be IMR4895-24.5g-Rem 9 1/2 primer for 2672fps in 26" barrell, OAL=2.34" (From IMR manual)
Hornady V-Max 60.0g
STARTING-AR2206H-23.9g-Rem 9 1/2 primer for 2800fps
MAX AR2206H-27.4-Rem 9 1/2 primer for 3200fps, Cheers.

Everyone is a bit slack on data for the rarer cartridges like this.

Hi I actually ended up doing a 25-35 rebarrel an that shots great with 12 grains of AR2205 and a 116 grain cast bullet gas checked.

About a week after getting that however, and what should happen but a guy from my club offer to sell me Winchester 1894 in 219 zipper with a nice 26" barrel, well isn't that always the way thing work out. (Recently I bought a rifle only to see one almost the same but with a nice octagonal barrel come up the very next day for $100 less). Anyway, I had to think about it for all of 10 minutes and once SAPOL stamp it the 219 zipper will be joining the family!

Anyway I shoot along side that guy at a fair few matches and the zipper groups beautifully, I pretty sure his load that makes it sing is 18.5 grains of AR2207 with a sierra 53 grain match king!
