Breaking down old cartridges with a kinetic bullet puller?

Post by creet » 03 Nov 2013, 10:19 am

Hi guys,

I've got a bit of a collection of old rounds now.

I've picked up a lot along the way and don't know the age or conditions a lot were store in. Some I think will be as old as a few decades.

Maybe a little more for a few off them.

I'd now like to empty the powder and reseat them so I can make a bit of a display.

What do we think of safety of breaking some of these down - history unknown - with a kinetic bullet puller?

Not looking to blow any up in the process obviously.

Cheers.

When you say decades, we're talking 30-40 years or so I guess?

Without knowing the history or condition of the cartridges, I wouldn't want to hazard a guess.

So much would depend on storage conditions, moisture, actual age...

Given the lack of information I'd be more comfortable pulling them with a press, rather than a hammer.
See you on the firing line.

Some smiths will do it for you to... You could always leave it to an expert and avoid the problem all together.

I see on the Lee site, a new universal bullet puller.

Might be worth a look.

Yeah, I'd go a collet style bullet puller too.

Bugger putting a 40 year old round in a hammer and thumping it into the ground

Safe as brick s**t houses. Pulling the projectile and emptying the powder is trobble free, getting the primers out is where people would normally get a fright if things dont go well, but provided your wearing your PPE you will be fine. I have just punched out 80 live primers using a hammer and pin punch without a single one going off.
