$40 for 50 22mag rounds?

lol, no thanks.

That would be more expensive than centre fire ammo once you got it to Aus

But that is special defense ammo, the price of 22 ammo is coming down, finally, including the magnum stuff.

22wmr for self defence?

Seems like an odd choice.

Admittedly not the best choice, my NAA mini-revolver will fit in the watch pocket of my jeans or the coin pocket of a pair of swimming trunks and anything is better than nothing.

Also there are people out there who can not, for one reason or another, handle anything bigger.

Better then nothing.... various force have durung cold war period used 22rf for sniping.... IDF currently use it to murder kids.... speaking of which, NAZIs had a 4shot 22LR belt buckle for use well and truly passed the point of SHTF.....

The Hornady brand that is special made for short barreled guns is pushing $40 per 50 when it can be found, the rifle fodder is a bit less. By the way I'm paying between $18 and $25 for bulk pack (around 500 rounds) 22 Long Rifle ammo now.

Update, I've been quite happy with the Highland RX ammo. I've yet to find time to kill paper with it, which is why I have not posted a follow up, but in clear contrast with the winchester and cci rounds, I'm hitting what I shoot at, which is the ultimate goal of any hunting and stark contrast to the CCI and Winchester..
I grabbed two more boxes. Hopefully i'll find the opportunity to do some 50m/ 100m calibration with it, but it certainly has a functionality that was missing from the other brands.

attachment=0]power_point_left.jpg[/attachment] You can see how rough the power point is, small wonder it can't manage 100mm groups at 100 metres. The best performing Gold Dot CCI was on the right, but discontinued.
Given how much extra brass and powder is in a WMR vs std 22LR.... the pricing is out of this world!
I got the Highland RX at $20,and a brick may come down to $180 Seems worth a brick commitment after some paper confirmation.
Still looking....I'll post a target shot in next week or so, when I find time to make one.

The Highland RX actually performed the worst for me in my American RF in WMR, won't be buying that again. 1st place was the CCI max mag, followed by Hornady rounds then the Highland.

Sorry to dig up an old thread. How has the ammo situation gone?

I've decided I need a 22 rimfire in my life.

Do I go the Magnum or the LR?

Get the LR and load down your 223 with trailboss for wmr performance and sound level.

No reason to own a WMR - unless you don't reload, centrefire does a better job, and for less expense.
Rimfire only has the advantage of cost so stick with .22LR.

Go wild... 17 HH, Fast and flat 1/2 the price of reloading the 223, low noise, faster than the 22 Hornet, little chance of richoet, it is just all good. The prices quoted for the 22 mag are high. Why wouldn't you reload?

Way to go. You can also use some shot gun powder to achieve the same.

Thanks for the tips guys.

The reason I was after rim fire is it's allowed at my local small bore club. Love the idea of 223 but can't use it there. I would still like to use the gun on rabbit and fox.

22LR ok for that? Hornet is interesting too.

You best check if they allow magnum rim fire.
A 22lr will do a fox in but only pretty close. The 22wmr is pretty expensive to feed. I had a few shots of a Lithgow 22wmr last weekend and it shot well with hornady 40gn but poorly with the hornady 30gn.

204! fantastic cal for sniping bunnies and removing their heads at long long ranges, got a 223 and it doesn't get a run when it comes to this sort of thing, the 204 is way better for it IMHO.

Not as cheap to run as a 222 or 223 but if you reload the prices are reasonably comparable (204 is slightly more) but you do get a very flat shooting little cal that is easy to reload for and a real pleasure to shoot.

Yes, for foxes I recon a 22lr is only reliable for up to about 40 meters or so. I shot a rabbit side on a few weeks ago in the chest using winchester bushman at about 35 meters and the projectile was sitting under the skin on the opposite side, so fox at 40 meters in the chest is about the max. ( heads shots a bit further I guess) Thats why I got a 223.

As G says you can down load a 222 or 223. I have a load for mine that is about equal to a 22 Hornet for when the need arises. Some blokes cast their own and load back to about 22 wmr.
