Primed case as field barrel cleaning tool?

Post by chookah » 05 Nov 2013, 8:05 am

Hey,

I thought this may have been covered somewhere else on the forum but couldn't find it. Sorry if repeating this...

In theory, if I dropped the muzzle of my rifle in the mud and got some crap in there, would chambering a primed brass and firing it work as a little puff of air to blow any mud out?

I'm talking about primer only, no powder obviously.

I read that the primer is actually a more powerful explosive than rifle powder.

Would a large rifle primer have enough puff to clean out a barrel at all?

I think they're ammonium nitrate or one of those kinds of explosives.

More powerful yes, but obviously only a fraction of the amount of powder you'd have in a cartridge.

Never shot a primed brass with no projectile before so couldn't say about the results though.

I'm sure it would puff out a bit of dirt, I doubt it would 'clean' the barrel though.

What's wrong with a bore snake?

Interesting idea, but I think you're over thinking it.

Bore snake will do it better.

Doesn't really take up any space either, so...

Probably would just add more carbon crap to your barrel?

Get a barrel snake mate.

It will do the job better and your won't have to always have a primed brass shell on hand.

Probably not great to have the inside of the primer exposed indefinitely anyway? Might decay or misfire or whatever once you've been carting it around in the air and moisture for a while...

Cheers guys,

Trying to be too clever I guess :D

I'll pick up a bore snake next time I'm at my LGS.
