7 saum here too. It's in a short action. It puts high b.c. 180s down range between 2900 and 3000ft/sec. The recoil is manageable. It's proven accurate. The dimensions just "look right" .

Because while long and thin gets a grin, short and fat is where it's at :drinks:

To be honest 180gr at near enough to 3000fps is plenty for anything I'd want to do with it and you could run it back a bit to preserve brass life and still get good accuracy.

7mm shines at longer ranges and let's face it if your shooting at shorter ranges .30 cal is the obvious choice. Most of the time these guns don't have fast enough twist rates to run heavier bullets with high BC's and its all a bit sad. Better off with a 1:8" twist that will still launch 150's but is fast enough to stabalize 180's. A smart build these days might be to go slightly faster again 1:7.5") and use the new Berger 195gr Elite hunter. One F Class shooter I spoke to tested them in his SAUM and shot the only possible that day at 600, first time out in a breeze.

G'Day Fella's,

I have for some time now, and presently own a Win M70 Classic S/S in 7mm Rem Mag, and it shoots really well (1/2-5/8" 3 shot groups).
If I was to do this again, I would probably go with a 7mm WSM!

Hope that helps

Doh!

the 7's are all so close that its hardly a contest. The thing with them is that they are designed to be fast and flat shooters. The rem mag is very nice, the weatherby is great and so is the short. But if I was going for one, it would be the Ultra Mag.
A 150g bullet at 3450fps is something to behold, and after punching holes in plates at 800m, I am a believer.

Got 1 and love it.
I'm not a big fan of belted cases, and the SAUM is just a bit more efficient than the WSM. Mine is a dedicated long range rig.

Kind of my point mate, so why shoot a 150gr at 3450 when a 168 or 180 a bit slower has a heaps better BC so hits harder and with less wind drift?

You are probably right that the 168 or 180 would be better, but i was shooting a mates F Class rifle and he only uses 150g bullets and shoots out to 1200m. Obviously different rifles like different feed, so it would be something you would have to work out.

heaps better BC? which bullets are you referring to, whats heaps and whats hits harder? As far as I'm concerned BC has little to do with wind drift other than less velocity decrease/less drift time ... and naturally whether your shooting with the rotation of the earth..... ... ok, I just through that in for Brett ;)

But I dont accept that the advantage of your simplistic premise is are other than minor, and limited certain elements;

Comparing Nosler 7mm bullets, lets go with the Accubond LR (seeing we are talking LR) the 150gr/175gr have a BC of 0.611/0.672 resp. Consider an almost max load velocity of 3250fps(150gr) / 3050fps(175gr):

The energy advantage of the heavier proj is at ranges 0yds / 250yds / 500yds / 750yds / 1000yds-
approx 100ftlb / 120 / 130 / 130 / 130...

Thats about the energy of a 22rimfire at 25 to 50m :P (game changer??)

While the lighter proj (that has the velocity advantage but the BC disadvantage) has 2inches, 6inches, 14inches, 25inches LESS bullet drop at 250yds, 500yds, 750yds and 1000yds respectively.....

Unless I'm mistaken...

This of course is comparing only one brand and one range of bullets..
