Universal .243 Bullet.

Post by MalleeFarmer » 04 Jun 2016, 2:42 pm

Might be a stretch but I'm after a bullet so I can have a single load for my 6mm SLR varminter. It will do mostly varminting some target shooting also a little long range goat shooting. Just wondering if you can suggest a bullet. I was thinking perhaps a 95gr SST I'd prefer a stronger bullet than that in .243 for goats but accubonds are $$$$$$ otherwise I recon they'd be the go.

I used these bullets in my 243, they worked quite well, accuracy was ok. They are really quite explosive under 50m tho.

I'm assuming there was supposed to be a link? Or a picture?

Cheers Man might have a look at those. I have glanced but seem costly compared to the Hornady stuff.

Yep I like Noslers too never used the BTs though and from all accounts I've heard they're a bit tougher than the SSTs but I use the 165gr SST in my .308 and they're awesome. Just a bit more concerned about construction in the smaller cals.

I've never had anything argue about dying that's been hit with them!!!
The little 90g Accubonds do a better job on your larger pigs ( You will often end up with an exit wound ) but with decent shot placement the B/T's won't let you down!!

I've been chasing the one round dose all for my .243 for a long time.

Unfortunately my .243 with ~1 in 9 twist only likes 100 grain projectiles, I've found that the heavier jacketed projectiles like Sierra game king are great on goats just dont cut it for varmints.

It's the reason I've added a .223 to the safe.
Along with the fact my ..243 loves the hot loads therefore target practice is out of the question as i don't want to waste barrel life on that.

One thing I've found interesting researching 6mm bullets is the 87gr Vmax it has I higher (.400) BC than the 95gr BT (.379) which seems counter intuitive. If I could be confident that it would perform on goats I'd be very inclined to use that.

Yea but the Vmax is designed for rapid uncontrolled expansion on predators/varmints. I'd be very concerned about poor penetration on say a Big Billy Goat. On another note I'm looking at the 105 Berger VLD Hunting everywhere seems to be out of stock does anyone know where I can get some? They should work in my 1-8 twist barrel and have an awesome BC for some target shooting as well.

Might Have to go with the 95gr BT unless my gunsmith has the 105vld hunting.

Yea I have read a few people use the Amax but I don't want to use a match bullet if they made a 105 high BC SST or Vmax I'd be interested but I don't want something that will pencil through or explode on impact.

I know they are expensive, but I only use Barnes TSX 80g in the .243 and they have never failed to impress me.

I don't follow you, what varmint have you hit with a 100gr Game King that wasn't extremely dead afterwards?

What aren't they 'cutting'?

Probably penciling through and Not expanding enough for a quick kill

That's exactly what happens.

If your shot pkacment isn't perfect then using heavier jacketed projectiles will not produce a kill.

I've had cat's and foxes take off after being shot.

It's like trying to hunt with a bow and arrow using target bolts instead of broad heads.

I've even had a head shot that dropped the animal but left it there alive, straight through the frontal lobe like a .243 sized drill bit.

Personally I've got my reservations about finding a pill that's good for varmints and larger game in a .243 at or above 80 grains, again thats the reason I bought a 1 in 12 twist .223 , it will throw nice little explosive 55 grain projectiles just nicely.
The .243 can wait it's turn for goats and pigs.
