7.62x54r for Finnish M39 Mosin

Post by lenners » 14 Jun 2016, 4:04 pm

I've put a Finnish M39 on layby at an interstate gun shop, and of course I neglected to check if the ammunition was available here in australia. I'm having a very hard time trying to find anyone that has it in stock or even has virgin or used brass. I'd be looking at reloading the ammo (for obvious reasons), that's if I find any.
If I can't get a hold of some ammo for the M39, should I consider cancelling my layby?

Western Firearms in Sydney".......0295794294.....will have dies brass and projectiles if you lucky....they have a web site or give them a ring. I've been very happy over the years with them.
Shouldn't be a problem for them or anyone else.

So if its Finnish... then it might be 7.62x53r, as opposed to x54r, big difference!!

G'day lenners,
Your post doesn't say where you are, but in Victoria Sellior & Bellot and Prvi Partizan 7.62x54R ammo is very common. Still some Rumanian surplus around also. Prvi brass is common at $95/100, but better to buy ammo and reload cases. As for calibre, the Finnish round is 7.62x53R, and has dimensional differences to the Russian round, they will generally interchange in all arms, and your M39 was purposely designed right from the start to safely chamber and fire the Russian steel cased 54R ammo, using the steel jacketed D166, 0.310" diameter, projectile. All copper jacketed ammo of either 53R or 54R is safe to use in all arms chambered for 7.62x53R rifles, so you can use Barnaul ammo in your Ukko Pekkar as well, Cheers.

Hi, yes I am in victoria. I have rung around the dealers here in Ballarat and surrounds and no one stocked 7.62x54R. I may have to travel to melbourne to track it down. I rang Lawrence Ordnance and they said they were out of Surplus ammo so unless there is another stockist, I'd have to go with factory PPU or S&B

The only place I found to stock 7.62x54R ammo was this guys: centrewayfirearms.com.au. S&B 190gn. That was March, last year though. I picked up dies, few boxes of ammo and brass for Mosin there at a very reasonable price. Give it a go. If you have no luck, DM me, I think there's a place in NSW that stocks and ships them.

Gday Lenners I have a Finnish M39 and Magnum sports in Sydeny (if your located around close enough to Sydney) were able to help me out with a large amount of factory Sellier and Bellot (about 15 boxes) which my M39 does pretty well with. I am reloading those cases with Lapua D166 projectiles in 200gn FMJ which go okay. Sierra Match King .311 174 Gm are excellent performers from my M39.

Okay so reading your post further posts you're in Vic. As has already been said there are many places that will sell the brass and the projectiles can be ascertained relatively easy. Also, have a look at projectilewarehouse.com you buy small samples of different ammo to try before you commit to massive bulk orders. They have an excellent service through there website
